I saw this on Mythbusters and immediately started researching it.  I loved the idea and loved making it.  It's supprisingly relaxing.  After two days of playing with mud..... I got my ball!  It's supposed to be shiny but, I didn't want to shine it.  I decided that I liked it the way it was.

In my hand, for size.

That looks great!  I saw an article about this some time ago in Craft magazine.  Does it really get rock hard or does it just feel like dry mud?  You must have great patience to do one!

edit*  I also wanted to tell you if you are interested in the article, you can search the Craft magazine archive on Craftzine.com.  Smiley

I just got the Craft magazine that this was in off of ebay and I saw this in there and I wanted to try one too. Of course, it is freezing out now, so it will have to wait until better weather, but I think they are really neat. I like how yours looks. I think the non-shiny looks great! The speckles are really pretty. Who would have thought that a ball of mud could be so cool?

Ooer, Pretty. I saw a dorodango for the first time a couple of days ago and now here's yours. I really want to try making one but alas, the ground is way to hard here because it's so cold.

My first couple of tries, it was a little difficult to get the consistancy of the mud right.  Just a hint, you really don't want it all that wet.  More of a shortbread dough consistancy.  I found that worked the best.  I was really supprised by how it came out.  It's kinda like a smaller, rough pool (billiard) ball.  Very hard.  Be careful not to drop it though.  It landed on a pillow but hit a spiral bound notebook binding and it chipped off some of the dirt.  So, they -are- kind of fragile.  I think you'll really enjoy making these.

Oh, the dirt came from Primm, Nevada, right outside of Las Vegas.  We stopped there to get gas on our way home from our first trip there with a couple friends.
