hi!  this is my first real knitted project, aside from a couple of squares.  i am now in love with cables!

pattern is from ravelry, found here

i actually reversed one of the rows of cables so that instead of being the same they mirror each other.  i too used dowels for handles, used a pencil sharpener on the end and painted them a cream color to match the ribbon.

here is the outside:

comments and criticism welcome!!

That's too cute, I love it! And that's a really good job for your first cables! And I completely understand, I just learned cables too, and now I'm putting cables on everything!

Congratulations! Your cables look perfect! I love the red thick wool and also the pretty white bow. Very impressive for your first non-square knit. Two thumbs up!  Grin

It looks really cute, but how do you keep the sticks you are using for handles from sliding out? It doesn't look like anything is keeping your knitting stitches on them.

you're right, there isn't anything holding them... the tutorial said to put a little bit of glue... but i didn't think it was necessary.  my stitches were tight enough and the dowels were rough.... at one point i had to slide a dowel over to center it and it took me FOREVER, going stitch by stitch, so i figured it won't be an issue.

That is very pretty and I'm very much impressed that you tackled cables as a beginner.  Great job!
