Thanks, I hadn't thought of that, I'll go take a look. I have a suspicion though that the only shortening we get here is Palm Oil shortening. I can't wait for my supplies to arrive now!

Edit: Oh I meant to ask, has anyone here ever made soap with ghee (purified butterfat)? Cause I could probably get that...

palm oil shortening would work too!!

good luck! Smiley

I'm backkkkkkkkkk!

Done with AmeriCorps... finally have my own kitchen again...!

I have a big box of EOs and FOs that haven't seen the light of day for ten months.  I'm really looking forward to opening it up.  It'll be a day of sorting and sniffing and scorching my nasal passages.  Bliss!

Have to restock all of my base oils, which is kind of depressing.  Is it just me, or did everything get way more expensive in the last year?  Was browsing the WSP scent catalogue and I swear all of the scents went up by a dollar or two per ounce at least.  Woe!

What's everyone been up these past missing months?

xoxo!

WSP Prices went up, then it went to *free* shipping, now with a 30$ minimum order Undecided unless you pick up in store than its 20% off your online order. With the bad luck I have with UPS, I might as well drive the 3 hours to Ohio and pick up my soap and candle supplies... It may still be 80* out but I gotta start stocking up in preparation for fall and Christmas gifts Roll Eyes

Dang!  WSP really did go up.  Poop.  Sad

Does anyone here bevel their soap?  If so, where did you buy your soap beveler and do you like it?

I bevel mine. I love my beveler, it's a small one from www.forcraftssake.com I've tried a lot of different ones, including a handmade one (by a friend) and the super expensive "Soap Doctor" but this is still my fave!

So you use the "lil' shaver"?:

I definitely like the fact that it's made out of plastic so it's easy to clean.

I've been toying with getting a new bar cutter, too.  I don't really want to go super fancy (like the multi wire type) but I want something that is a little more accurate than the 1 at a time bar cutter my dad made for me a couple of years ago.  Does anyone have this cutter and do they like it? (I'm looking at the wavy/straight combo - I like to be able to do either!):

Yep the lil shaver! haha, I actually also have the multi wire type from For Crafts Sake, but I got it at a soaper's garage sale at a soaping get together. I would never have paid full price for it (although I do love it!)

Someone made me a box type cutter like that and it's cool. But honestly, for that much money I would probably just buy a mitre box from the hardware store. That's what I have and it works well. When you have a box type cutter like that you are locked into a certain size bar. If you change your bar size you can't use the cutter. Also, I'm pretty sure I got my wavy cutter and my straight cutter for cheaper than on that site. Let me check around (of course it could just be that prices have gone up).

It actually has an adjustable stopper that lets you cut soap thicknesses between 3/4" and 2 1/2" in 1/4" increments, which is why I was attracted to it - if I decided to make a thicker or thinner cut, I could!  But I get what you say about being confined by the size of the box.  I actually emailed them a few months ago, because my bars are 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 and they said they could make it wider for an additional fee. (I think it was $15?) But, like you said, it's already pretty pricey as is.

Have you used a miter box to cut soap?  I'm guessing probably if you're recommending it.  Smiley  I'm just afraid without having a stop at the end that I will still end up with wonky looking bars if the whole loaf accidentally moves forward while I'm cutting.  Perhaps that's an unfounded concern?

Yep I use a miter box. I mark my bar with a ruler then slice it with the muttered box. It doesn't slip around, the soap log is too heavy and the bottom of the muttered box is textured.

Stupid autocorrect. Also the mitre box has a ledge type thing to stay securely on the counter
