Congratulations to this summer's featured artist,
erica_tattoos!!
erica_tattoos is a sweet and supportive part of the Craftster community and also INSANELY talented! She's blown us away with creative projects like her
Whimsy House,
Day of the Dead/Rockabilly Holy Family and even the painting she did on a
taxidermy fish!
We're thrilled to recognize her and hear what she has to say about her creative process and inspirations.
1 - How long have you been crafting? What's the first thing you remember crafting?well - that's kindof a tricky question.... i don't ever really remember NOT crafting! pretty much ever since i can remember i've been getting into my mom's sewing supplies and making art supplies out of things that - technically - weren't! i remember i used to "modify" my barbies when i was a kid - and my clothes..... i was probably something of a terror to my folks on their limited budget at the time!
2 - What's your favorite media?mixed! my favorite thing to do is find some interesting cast-away thing and modify it with acrylic paint and hot-glue and whatever else the item itself seems to call for... i think i've always found a big blank canvas kindof intimidating. It's always been more fun for me to find something that's already got its' own life and personality and then find some way to draw that out or dress it up...
3 - What inspires you? ohhh... every day life? i'm a tattoo artist, so i get a lot of my ideas from there.... i also like mexican folk art/day of the dead imagery, catholic iconography, and all kinds of art and architecture from foreign cultures.... and i loooove bright colors and fun, whimsical themes...
4 - Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?haha.... um, probably "anything goes?" maybe i've got a short attention span, but i don't like to do any one thing too much, i get bored. so i'd just say keep trying new things, and keep challenging yourself to do something different, or do something you've done a thousand times before in a totally different way.... most of my favorite things i've created, both crafts and tattoos, are the things that had me farthest from my comfort zone while i was working on them.... but doing that gets you thinking in all new ways, and there's no telling where that can lead you!
5 - On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?hmmmm...... well, most of them do end up on the miscellaneous boards, but i think i've posted in needlework, toys n playthings, more art less craft, jewelry n trinkets, quilting, image reproduction, occasions n holidays..... i told you i'm all over the place!!! probably just one or two things in each of those.... =)
6 - What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?it's hard to choose - i think i love everything for a different reason! how bout my two favorites? one of my favorites is the mini art quilt i made for retro_rose in the maq4 swap:
