I had been wanting to make these coasters ever since I saw them in this post http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=222282.0 last year.  So when my best friend said she wanted some I decided to make them for her for christmas.  I didn't want to throw away the board because it seemed so wasteful so I converted it into a matching serving tray.

I'm really lazy so I just reconstructed some of the same match ups as jessfun23 (hope she doesn't mind! Embarrassed) and only changed some, including the addition of the native RI beverage Del's frozen lemonade (anyone who hasn't had the pleasure, you're missing out!).  I was upset that I accidentally used ale twice but I touched it up later and made one into ade.

I lined the sides of the coasters (and the edge of the board) with bright blue ric rac.

I will be looking for an old scarabble board and tiles at sales now.  I want those coasters and the tray!!!  What a cute idea.  I love it.

Ooooh.  I love the serving tray.  I've seen the coasters before, but the tray definitely adds a touch of elegance to the whole ensemble.  Great work.

Thanks everybody Smiley  It was funny because even her mom wants one now!  And it was super cheap and easy to make.  I just had to overcome my fear of using a table saw to cut the tray and thankfully I didn't maim myself in the process.  Actually, I'm sure something could be done with the tile trays but I just couldn't conjure up a way to use them (attempted to make the handles with them but couldn't figure out how to secure them).

Good idea. I want to make a scrabble coffee table one day (watch this space!).

Thanks!  Yeah, I love scrabble and there is so much you can do with the tiles Cheesy  I've seen a lot of posts on here that incorporate them in jewelry, notebooks, coasters, etc.  I don't know if they're cheaper to buy separately online but I got the entire game for $3.99 at Savers, the cork backing at the Dollar Tree and only spent $0.60 for the handles at the Salvation Army!  All other materials (plywood, paint, glue, ric rac and varnish) I already had on hand.  Grand total: $5.59!!!  I was super cheap this Christmas but hopefully no one noticed Undecided
