For the kids (and some fun "adults") what about a jabberwocky or cheshire cat pinata? If you did the jabberwocky, you could get a wooden vorpal sword to "slay" it!

In regards to the chess pieces, are you making all the pieces? It might be awesome if you could make them out of something like clay so you could keep them forever and have them as a garden game. It would be such a lovely keepsake for you to enjoy for ever! I'll try to see if I can source something, that way its less damaging than styrofoam!
