A thought on the roses - you might try tool dip (like this: http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000210.php).

It seems like real paint might dry to be a little crunchy and wrinkly if you used a thick enough coating to drip, but this stuff is like a rubbery plastic and dries kind of thick to the drips would be pronounced - I think if you did it right it would still look like wet paint even after it was dry.

That tool dip stuff is so neat! I had no idea such a thing even existed! I was going to use a spray gloss I've had laying around for a while to make them look like wet paint, but that's a pretty good idea too! Maybe halfway between the two and just a small can of a high-gloss latex wall paint or something.

And the Eat me/Drink me tags are totally a must! Perhaps wine glass charms that look like tiny "Drink Me" tags out of Shrink plastic.

That picture of the chess pieces is MUCH better than the one I tried to draw for the "Can-We-PLEASE-Have-an-Alice-Wedding" sketches! We're going for outside though so they wouldn't even have to be cut in half, as there would be plenty of room! I suppose it depends on how tricky they end up being to mass produce...

I love the theme. You should check out the Tom Petty video for 'Love don't come around here no more'. It is all Alice but in a real world sense.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7gWzWqJu1k

I know you are trying to stay away from the overboard Alice Disney theme. But you GOTTA get a HUGE mad hatter hat! Good luck!

I think this is really lovely. Normally themed weddings scare me a bit, but you seem to be doing this in such a lovely (and classy!) way that I think it will be beautiful. I especially like the mismatching tea cup ideas.
Have you looked at the gwen stefani video, it's a bit less classy, but does the alice and wonderland inspiration without being too literal (i seem to remember).

For the cakes you could do one shaped like a big mushroom and then smaller ones shaped like "eat me" cakes.

Here are some non-weird mushroom cakes I found:

You could find a way to incorporate caterpillar.

You also need Cheshire cat.

For favors there can be gloves and fans, like the ones the white rabbit drops?

(And I'm assuming, of course, that at your reception will be served be-yooo-oooo-ti-ful sooo-oooup Smiley)

For the invitation verse, I wonder if you can play on the "All on a Golden Afternoon" verse that introduces the story?

I saw something online that would go perfect with your theme. Take a vintage pinochle card (there's more face cards in a deck) that indicates your preferred dress code. You have to see it to understand how awesome it is.
It's their # 6 item. http://offbeatbride.com/2009/01/vintage-diy-invitations#more-1550

I think your wedding will be beautiful.  Grin My hubbie is the Art Director for the alt weekly newspaper here in Dallas - and last year's "Best Of" issue was Alice-themed.  The costumes are more risque than I would imagine you might want,  Cheesy but I love the general ideas (of course, I love everything he does...).  The designer of the costumes is at http://www.lweatherread.com/L.Weatherread/home.html

Here's my suggestion!  For the reception area, add some lanterns to add to the fun tea party!  Here are a couple of pictures of the Tea Cups at Disneyland and how they did their lanterns.  I know you wanted to stay away from the "Disney" feel of it, but I think you can add some and still make it wedding-ish.

Here are some links to lanterns that you can get at Target that would go with this idea (I'm sure you can find them other places too, but I Love Target Smiley )

And, just so you can see what they look like at a reception, here's what the tent at my brother and sister-in-law's wedding looked like.  Their theme was inspired by peacocks:
