The pins go along the edge of the head because it is too shallow to stick them straight up and down.  If you don't know this, wool contains an oil that protects your needles and pins from rust.  Of course, pins are made of stainless steel these days.  But it sure makes me feel good!  You can also put sand inside your pincushion.  It will sharpen your needles each time you use them.
