My resolution this year is to try and get organized.  I suffer from a major case of packrat-itis so there's stuff everywhere you look.  You'll see in the "before" picture that I've kind of started with a box system but there are piles and piles of bills and statements and old receipts that need a good home so that's where the filing cabinet comes in.

I'd been searching on craigslist for one for a while but hadn't seen exactly what I wanted.  I'm a firm believer in dumpster diving (which, btw, contributes enormously to my disease!!) and as I was coming home from work the other day I saw 2 perfectly good cabinets so I dove away!!!

I only took one and that was enough...do you guys know how hard it is to fish one of those heavy things out of a dumpster?Huh

Anyway, I gave it a good cleaning and a few Ikea napkins later...here's the result!!

This is how it looked before

And after...

It seems that different people have an idea of what I am, and what I should be. And then there's me.

Thank you, I'm happy with the way it looks so far but I think I want to do the sides, too.

oh wow that is the coolest cabinet I have ever seen!  How did you do that? It looks like see through cloth!  To me at least, is it with paint or Ikea napkins? Wink  I'm so glad you saved it from the dumpster and gave it a new home, it looks so much happier now
Wicked job!

Thank you, NightOwl!
I used Ikea napkins and some Mod Podge to cover it.
The napkins are 3 ply so I separated the first layer with the design and set it aside.  Then I used the other two plain white layers and covered the cabinet completely (I did this in sections).  And finally, I cut up the layer with the design and arranged it in a way I liked and applied it on top of the white.
It looks cloth-like, I think, because the napkins are so thin that when you apply the adhesive on them they tend to wrinkle and when they dry they become a bit transparent.
