I don't know what you think about flowers but there are lots of cheap alternatives to having them like button bouquets, tissue paper flowers, origami, and sweets4ever up there did some darling beaded ones (i'm a bit of a wedding stalker. hehe). If you want real flowers, we made our own for my best friend's wedding a couple of months ago and it was really cheap and they looked fantastic.

Also you could start saving glass jars and bottles; fill with candles or flowers and tie a ribbon around each.

Adding to this idea^^^

If you save up those starbucks glass containers it actually looks very pretty to peel off the labels, tie wire around the top leaving a long handle with beads on it, curl the ends hanging down, melt wax in the bottom and stick a skinny candle in it.  You can hang them by the handle part.  I've made them before but I don't have pics.

Someone else has a post about these too but they're very cheap and easy to make.  Just get the tissue paper from the dollar tree or somewhere equally cheap.

ok, here is my grand, if i were to get married all over again, idea that no one around here seems to think is as cool as I do.
Go to your local newspaper.  Ask for some roll ends, they will give them to you for free.  Roll the paper out over the tables.  Place old jars on the table full of crayons, markers, color pencils, whatever.  There you have centerpieces, table cloths and keep sakes from the wedding.  And if you are reusing the jars and using coloring implements from stash or dollar store.  it will not cost you anything.  Unless it is dollar store, then it will cost you like $10.  And for a family friendly wedding like you are planning, I think it would be fun.
Now you can all tell me what a nerd I am, everyone else dose.  hehe.

CONGRATS!

I have a free idea. How about a theme? Themes themselves are free , all you have to do is think of it. If you did that, you may be able to tie the decorations and cupcakes together. Maybe you should use the colors from the dress you bought?

I hope your planning is going well.

So, I guess this isn't really decorations, but fireworks are always fun. Late June/early July is prime time to find them everywhere (so long as they're legal where you are) and can make for a cheap, flashy show.

Fynns_Mom:   I think your idea is a GREAT one and I might use it someday.  There is practically no cost, it takes the place of table clothes and it keeps guests bored AND you have something to keep.  LOVE IT!

Busy!! I meant to say it keeps guest busy!

You should check out your local Freecycle online. In my area a few weeks ago someone was giving away their wedding decorations. You can always put a wanting ad there of specific items.
