When I had my camp fire group we made homemade dog treats and cat toys for the local shelter. For the cat toys, you just take old baby socks and put a teaspoon of catnip, in there, some stuffing, and then either knot it closed or sew it. If there are birds there, you can make some bird toys too - there's a ton of websites for making bird toys if you google. Those are pretty fun to make.

Thank you for this thread! I never thought to craft for my local shelter! Im so excited now !!!

Do your shelters have recreational rooms? If you have some spare wood and old carpet, and the tools for it (saw and staple gun), maybe you could build a cat tree? My sister and I made one for our cats. http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf35516793.tip.html

My MIL & I crochet cat blankets.  Whenever a cat is adopted, they get to take one home with them.  Right now, we are having a hard time keeping up (that's a good thing!)

My FIL has made 2 scratch posts using pvc pipe, sisal rope, cardboard and carpeting.

I try to bake homemade dog cookies when I can to bring into our local shelter, as well.

Grin Grin Grin Thank you so much for all the ideas. Here in Portugal we have a huge problem with abandoned animals and the laws just don't protect them Angry The shelters can't help everyone, and you are not punished if you leave an animal to die... Sad I'm going to do use some of your ideas to give to those in need here. Grin Grin Grin
