My first needle felted object.
«
on:
January 25, 2009 01:03:56 PM »
Hi! My new obsession is needle felting. I made this for mamarose22 for the OTT (One Tiny Thing) swap. I had fun making this and loved the way it came out.
criteria for this swap was that the items had to be within 4x4x4 inches. Which is why I had to get creative with the stem:
Just wondering for my future reference, how do some get such a smooth finish on their needle felted objects? And I only poked myself twice!! Darn those needles are sharp!
Thanks!

I have no suggestions because I don't know how to do this but I just had to tell you how LOVELY this was. It's just great. I saw it on the OTT thread but, truly, just wonderful!

So soft and pretty looking - and I think the fuzzy finish just adds to the softness, since rose petals are so soft (not that I'd know how to get it smooth). Really beautiful!

Maybe they wet felt it to finish it. But it's gorgeous as is.

The way to get a great smooth finish in needle felting is to use a razor. All you need are those cheap disposable razors from the store. Just use it like you would use a razor on any part of your body. It does create a pile of fuzzies, but it will give you that smooth finish. There may be other ways to do this, but I picked this tip up from some place that I cannot remember. Try it out because I'm sure you'll love it.
Also, I love that flower! It's very beautiful.

Beautifully made.
And I like how you were able to layer the colors well.
About a smooth finish - there are different sized felting needles. Coarse to fine.
With a really detailed project, people start with the coarse needles, and finish off with the fine needles.

Thanks everyone for the wonderfully kind comments.
I did purchase the '40' sized needles and my second project came out a lot nicer. Although, it's rounder, so I didn't have the issues with the fiber stuck in the pad. The needles did finish it up nicely.
I can't post pics of my second item yet as it is for a swap partner and I don't know how sneaky she is!!!

This is wonderful! And especially so since it is your first project. Lift your project every so often to keep the fibers from sticking to the pad. You'll get a feel for how often you need to lift and you'll spent less time repairing what you could have prevented.
