My best friend went to UNC-Chapel Hill and was in a sorority.  She had all these shirts she never wore anymore but could not part with.  She knew that I had made a t-shirt quilt before http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=266345.0 and asked me to make this one for her.

Here it is completed!  I am so pleased with it!  I need a better picture though!

This is the back, along with a label that was printed on printable fabric (I love that stuff)

Here it is in stages...

First off, I cut all the pocket designs out roughly.

Then turn the shirt piece logo side down and place a piece of iron-on interfacing (light weight) over the top of the shirt. Make sure that the interfacing is bigger that the logo.

Cover these layers with a kitchen town and squirt with water until damp.  I found this technique on a blog I read daily called Pink Chalk Studio http://pinkchalkstudio.com/blog/

Iron. Press the iron straight down, do not move back and forth.

Ta da!  Now you have like 35 more to do...

Then I used a 5 1/2 block and cut out squares.

I used a solid piece of each shirt to have a little more to work with in these "patchwork" blocks.  I ended up with four 15 1/2 inch blocks, which I placed a 15 inch quilt block template on and trimmed as I would use that 15 block for the large design and I wanted everything uniform.  Here is a close up on those 4 blocks...

Then I did the same thing with the larger image on the back of the shirts, except I used a 15x15 inch quilt block template.  You can see the interfacing on the back here...

Look how deep the stack of shirt backs is!

In the end I had 25 blocks with big designs and 4 patchwork blocks that I placed at each corner.  In this picture you can see everything laid out on my kitchen floor.  I am sitting in the middle of the quilt to show size and to hide the missing block.  That shirt is in the mail, I need one more and my best friend is sending 2 because there is one block I am not too happy with...

So hopefully I will get those shirts Saturday and I can start putting the quilt top together!  I'll be back with pictures of the finished project!  Grin  Comments and Concerns Welcomed!

Wow! I'm usually not a huge fan of T-shirt quilts, but yours is so neat and nicely put together. Great job! I bet your friend will flip out. Wink

I've been wanting to do a tshirt quilt for my son - but haven't tackled it yet.  I love the patchwork squares on each of the corners - genius!

Great job! You are making me impatient to start my own. Unfortunately, I don't have enough shirts yet (makes me wish I hadn't worn all of my high school shirts at my old restaurant job).

Are you putting borders around each of the t-shirt blocks or are you just going to piece them together?  I have TONS of sorority t-shirts that I know I need to do something with...

What are you using to back your quilt?  Do you think it would be a bad idea to make another "face" for the back?  Does it need more stability?  I've never made a quilt before, but with my mom's help, I think I could do this!!!  It's all straight stitching.  Wish me luck!

That is a great way to keep old sorority shirts!  If I had enough fraternity shirts I would do the same thing, but alas, no such luck.  Looks nice!

Can I just say I love Craftster!  You guys rock!

MissMatched: No, I have chose not to sash them, that is what I learned the term is for those little borders around each block.  This thing is WAY too big to begin with for only my 2nd quilt!  Eek!  As far as the back my friend (and I) love polka dots.  So in true UNC fashion I am going to do a Carolina blue with white polka dots for the back.  Binding has not been decided yet.
http://www.fabric.com/Webdata/Product/d79ad36e-2d99-47c7-acf8-eee2264e87b4/Images/Medium_AR-589.jpg
The fabric image is from www.fabric.com

As far as stability, I cannot stress enough how much I love iron on interfacing!  It works like a charm!  Plus it is the lighter weight that is like .99 cents a yard at Joanns.  Perfect with a 40% coupon when you buy a massive amount like I did! Smiley  MissMatched, I have step-by-step pictures of the whole process if you think you would like to see them I can post them.

cherry5: Don't worry I could totally get carried away with picture taking and craftster posting Wink  You'll see plenty more, probably more than you would like!  Cheesy

mindboggld: The little corner patchwork squares are my favorites too... thanks!

Padester, Eliea, lurv2knit, and RockDragon: Thank you so much for taking the time to "spread a little love around".  It always thrills me to see some feedback on my projects!  I am glad that you like it so far!

First of all, I went to UNC as well and I recognize way too many of the shirts in the pic.  :-)  Second, it looks great!  I have stack of shirts from high school I've been wanting to do this to but have been afraid to start.  (And I can't even think of cutting up any of my UNC shirts just yet, I'm still too attached.)  And the choice of backing fabric is perfect!  Good luck finishing and please post pics when you are done.  I'm sure your friend will love it!

That's what I love about crafting. You find ways to keep stuff that still has sentimental value and make it into something useful. Your quilt top looks so professional. And this is only your second quilt?! I'm impressed. Cool

I'm stealing your pocket idea  Grin

I'm making 4 blocks.

I've possibly eliminated some more shirts.  I have the main layout and I'm trying to add the smaller pieces to the border.  I'll take pictures soon, I need a new cutting mat and blade for my rotary cutter.

Calliel: Yes, aussies are the best dogs ever!  I wouldn't take anything for mine!  She is so smart and sweet, I could ramble on forever about my dog... Wink

MissMatched: I added these pics to the first post.  I know that I love it when I can find a tutorial with step by step instructions, and I feel honored that I can provide something for someone else after all the tutorials I've used from Craftster!  Cheesy

hollyrh: Small world!  I did not go to Carolina, I grew up only 25 minutes away from there, and I wanted to go somewhere further from home so I choose Appalachian.  But I love Chapel Hill and was there just this past weekend for a concert.

Oh, lots of comments I haven't commented back on!  Sorry, I have been under the weather and then out of town.  I am sure the last 2 shirts I am waiting on to finish are sitting in my mailbox at home right now.  When I get home Sunday I am excited to get back to work on this!

mermaidcafe:  I get a lot of inspiration that way too, I hope that if you make a t-shirt quilt you will post pictures!

everkutz:  Thanks for your kind comments, I am hoping it will be something she treasures for a long time.

MissMatched: You're Welcome!  Smiley

knuckstermom:  Yes, Aussies are wonderful, I just love mine to pieces!  I hope that this motivates you and that you will share your work with us!  I love to look at everyone's pictures!

I was finally able to meet up with my friend (she lives out of town) and she gave me the fabric for the back of the quilt.  Here it is!  I can't wait to get started quilting!

This is UNC fabric from Joann's.
