Castle for the Arts: A Collaborative Public Sculpture
Call to Artists!

ARTSomerville has been invited to join Somerville Open Studios, scheduled for May 1-2, 2004. I am looking for artists to work on a collaborative public sculpture that will be placed alongside the bike path just off of Willow Ave during SOS.

Our piece will be called Castle for the Arts. The process of its creation will serve as an allegory for our dreams of transforming the vacant armory building. Together we will take something old, discarded, unused and turn it into a place of beauty -- well, I may be stretching things a bit, the sculpture will be constructed from recycled plastic bags. But it will be fun and more importantly good publicity for ARTSomerville and our goal to create an arts and cultural center in Somerville.

Volunteers are needed to:

1. Help crochet panels of the structure. Material being used is 1 inch strips of plastic bags, the type you get from Shaws or have the newspaper delivered in. (Dont laugh. This is not only possible; the result is surprisingly pleasing! )

2. Supply a studio space or large living room to hold "crocheting bee".

3. Assist with construction afternoon/early evening Friday April 30th.

4. Assist with deconstruction 6:00 p.m. Sunday May 2nd.

I am more than happy to provide guidance on the crocheting part. The larger the needle, the quicker, it goes. We may end up organizing an event or two at peoples studios to help facilitate the production. Otherwise, people can drop off their panels at a prearranged place in late April. How big will it be? Depends on how many volunteers I get! So pass the word.
