hello all,

i just received this yarn that i bought from etsy... i would love to link a pic of it and a link to the seller but am not sure if that's ok?  anyway, it is my first handpainted yarn, and the first yarn i've ever purchased from anywhere other than joanne's, ac moore, or michael's.  i won't get into the story of it but it just turns out that the name of the yarn has a special meaning for my fiance and me.

so anyway... i have crocheted for years and am new to knitting (working on my first scarf now) and for some reason i see this yarn as being perfect for knitting.  any ideas what i should make with it?  it is sport weight and some nice deep oceany colors, vibrant blue and beautiful green.  i don't want to make it into just your average scarf of hat.  any ideas or links to patterns/tuts that would be good for it?

thanks for reading that if you did.   Smiley

The first thing that comes to mind is a pillow, or pillow cover--since you said the name of the yarn has special meaning for you and your fiance. I don't have a link to any, but you could probably search for some ideas online. My other suggestion is using some of the yarn in a blanket or something that you and your fiance could use.

I know you said you didn't want to make it into a basic scarf, but you still could make a scarf that has stripes or various types of yarn used in it (including this yarn you are mentioning), and make a scarf for each of you, with them both containing the yarn.

Just some ideas that popped into my head...  Smiley

Is it 1 skein, or several? Because, depending on the amount of yarn you have, you could get different suggestions that would be more on target.  Smiley Also, if you can't/don't want to post a pic of the yarn, you could always post a link to the etsy listing. You'd also be driving traffic to the shop, so I'm guessing the seller would be very thankful for that.  Wink

ok well here's my disclaimer:  MODS - i'm sorry if i'm not supposed to do this.. i don't want it to be construed as advertisement because i don't even know this seller... but anyway, here is the etsy page:

http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=13106756

it's 550 yds and relatively thin so i don't really think a blanket is a viable option.  a pillow maybe.  i do like the idea of using some of it in something for both of us.  hmmm...

Judging from the yards/ounces ratio, it looks like this is a fingering weight yarn. So yes, it's very thin yarn. And it's kind of hard to find something you both can use. If you had another skein, you could make something like a couple of pillows or even a blanket. Does it have to be something you both can use together?

How about a set of smittens? Make a pair of ordinary mittens, and one smitten for you to share. Here's a pattern for the shared mitten:

You'd have to do more stitches with bigger needles to accommodate the fingering weight yarn, but this at least gives you the general idea.
