I have been looking for a good way to store my earrings and rings for a while, since I already have my necklaces and bracelets up on corkboard on my wall.  I wanted something very different from a square screen, so I finally came up with this:

Of course the webcam doesn't do it justice, but here it is!  I made the main body out of tinfoil and covered it with modeling clay, then poked holes in the sombrero to make space for earrings.  HIs arms are for storing rings.  Of course, I don't have that many pairs, so the small size is ok.  If you have more, you could just make a bigger one!  (This guy is about 5 inches tall, including the hat).

That is too cute!  I love how it's good for any kind of jewelry, and it's a welcome change from all the screen earring holders that have been posted lately(not that those aren't cool).

Wow! that is so funny and cool! (hrmph...I wish I knew what "cool" was in Spanish....I suppose saying "tu senor saguaro es un poco frio" would be entirely incorrect Tongue)

That is to-o-o cool!!   Love it.

Would you happen photo of it somewhere permanent online? (quality doesn't matter, as long as you can see what it is).... I'd love to include a link to it from my website.

P.S. Are you using the term "modeling clay" genearlly and use the oil-based stuff that never hardens, or did you use an oven bake (like polymer clay) or air dry clay??

I would be honored to merit a permanent link  Grin  Would the Craftster picture hosting work?

To answer your question, I used Crayola "Model Magic" clay that air-hardens within 24 hours.  However, the clay was kind of oddly textured (sort of spongey) and it started drying fairly rapidly.  Next time I might go with a clay that needs to be baked in the oven.

I wish I knew the word for cool in Spanish but don't.  I probably should since I studied abroad but somehow managed not to pick it up.

Sure, the Craftster link would work as long as you don't remove it to put in other photos ... I don't know much about the capacity that Craftster gives for personal photo accounts, but some places don't give much and members are always removing old ones to add newer ones  Shocked.

As for polymer clay, I do think you'd like playing around with it to make these... you certainly wouldn't have the quick "drying" problem.

I'd suggest not using Sculpey clay for the hat especially because it's probably somewhat thin where the earring posts go, and Sculpey is more brittle after baking in thin areas than the other clays (Premo, Fimo, or Kato would be better).

If you make the arms thick enough, you wouldn't have to worry about this, but if the arms are thin you'd probably want to use a wire armature inside each arm (which would also stick a bit into the trunk) for best support... or the trunk could be clay formed around a bunch of twisted wires, with each wire bent down to make an arm at the proper height  [did that make sense??].  You could also tightly wrap aluminum foil around the wire(s) if you want, to save clay... just don't leave air pockets.

You could also make the saguaro fairly tall because it would be strong ... it might need a reasonably wide base though to compensate for the wide hat so it wouldn't tump over!

(Let me know for sure the exact link you'd like to use for the photo.)
