I found some old leather in a trunk in my parent's attic and since I didn't have a mandolin strap I figured I would make one. This was the first time I worked with leather so it could have come out better, but it holds my Mandolin and that's what counts...

random leather pieces

Had to punch each hole with an awl and then sew it by hand... Should I have waxed the thread? Probably would have made it stronger...

I used a wood burner to do some vine-like designs

Vine-y-ness everywhere, and my Mandolin

Trying to show the burned designs

I made it adjustable, I don't really know why since I'm the only that plays it... Smiley

Then I added a backing

Finished! Tell me what you think! Also in case I do anymore leather work, any tips would be appreciated!

I like the sewn together look, it gives a cool, vintage/organic vibe to it, and the purple brings it all together. Alas I have no tips for leather-working, but go you for reusing something sitting around in a trunk and turning it into something useful AND awesome!

You did a good job on it for a beginner.  I think it looks great.

If you decide to do more leather work, my suggestion would be to get a darning needle and some artificial sinew.  The sinew is already waxed and is super strong.  Or you could try waxed linen thread.  It's very strong as well.  Either one will hold up for many years.

I like the burning on it.  I think it looks great.

I buy mine from the local indian tribe, but they also have it at Tandy Leather.  I don't know if they have a store near you, but you can buy it online.

If you can't find it, macrame thread is a pretty good substitute.  You can find it at most craft stores.

That's very artistic. I love the vines and the use of scraps. I want to make my sons one for their guitar. Your mandolin is beautiful, too.

When I first saw the scraps you were working from, I wondered how in the world you were going to get a continuous strap that looked good.........what a fantastic job! The design and backing tie it all together, and it looks wonderful.
