When I went to high school Home Ec was actually considered an elective class and not a required course and by my Senior year Home Ec was only for the pregnant girls and nobody else was allowed to take it. Lucky for me though my mom has always been sewing and made my sister and my clothes for years when we were growing up. I remember getting for Christmas when I was 5 a My Little Pony sewing machine that was battery operated. It took me 2 months to make a 4 patch potholder that my mom still has in her memory chest.

You did a great job, it's wonderful!  I love this bag.  Yeah, it's a big project but if you can read instructions and have some sewing skills and a decent sewing machine that can handle sewing thru thicknesses, it's very doable.  I was intimidated, too, but I really, really wanted one, so I just took my time and waited until DH was out of town so I could devote myself to it and it came together nicely.

Love your fabrics, it's very handsome!
