One of my New Year's Resolutions/Goals for 2009 is to make at least one preemie hat each month this year to donate.  Now, as quick as this first hat worked up, I know I could easily increase that goal to even one per week, but I don't want to overwhelm myself.  Twelve hats in twelve months is far more realistic for me when I consider all the other projects that I want to do, as well as all the other stuff that I have to do on a daily basis.

Here's the first hat for the year:
(in progress)

(and complete)

Pattern link and stuff can be found on my blog: http://www.uglygrayhouse.blogspot.com

Anyone care to join me on this quest? This hat seriously took about a half hour if not less to make, and there are tons of cute patterns out there.  This would be a great way to use up scraps of baby yarn that you might have laying around!

This is adorable! What a great way to put your crafting skills to use. I think I still have the preemie beanie the hospital gave me about 4 yrs ago. I'm more than sure it was hand crocheted too. It meant a lot to me then, and I'm more than sure these will be just as meaningful to the receivers.

I'd like to join you!

I've never crocheted a hat before, actually. Well...I crocheted a beret once, but it was turned out misshapen and weird! Maybe I will have better luck with this?

I'll check our your blog later and post about it on mine, too.

Thanks!

If you have trouble finding the post on my blog (it's buried by now), just click on the label to the right for crocheting - that will show just the crocheting related posts. Smiley

I think for my next hat, I am going to try this one out from YouCanMakeThis.com - click on Free, and then it's the one for the windowpane preemie hat.

There's a ton of cute patterns here: preg_replace('/(.{19})/', '$1 ', 'crochetpatterncentral.com') Click on free pattern directory, preemie, then hats.
I can't wait to see your hats!!  I am keeping all of mine in a ziploc bag until the end of the year so I can donate them all together. Smiley

Preemie Beanie #1

I did not use a pattern, but basically did spiral rounds in sc for about 8 rounds, increasing with each round. Then I changed to a sc & hdc stitch in every other sc stitch & space until I felt it was a good length.  I used a sc edging which can be rolled up or not...then added pom pom.  So easy & fast.  I can't wait to collect & give these out at the end of the year.

I don't know why, but that hat reminds me of a pineapple LOL!!

I made a 2nd hat for this month.  It's just a really simple one that was a length of BLO DCs sewn up together, and gathered at the top with a little pom-pom.  Since it wasn't really a "pattern" to follow, I just kept it at my desk and would work on it for a few stitches at a time while waiting for web pages or reboots or whatever.

Here's the 3 hats that I've made so far:

March's hat is done!  This one was made using Bev's Bumpy Hat pattern found at: http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/bevs-bumpy-hat.html

(Sorry the picture came out dark/yellow ~ I'll take a better picture when it is light out!)
I loved this little pattern... it was pretty quick to work up (3 episodes of the Simpsons that were DVR'd, LOL) and I love, love, love the little bumps. What a fun texture!

Thanks!

I made a fifth hat now too... I had just enough left of that last ball of baby yarn to make this one.

I made this hat:

with the flower toppers from here:

smrfchic...those new ones are too adorable!

Here's another preemie beanie that I made w/ a lil' bow...

I liked the yarn so much that I ended up making two more beanies for a newborn & 3 month old boys. (sorry this pic is dark) the other beanie was similar but opposite main/accent colors...I guess I never took a pic before giving that one away

I'd like to try a couple of new patterns now.
P.S. thanks for the pineapple comment  Smiley

Oh, I like those!  I need to go buy more soft yarn as I have used up all of my stash of leftover baby yarns, and maybe I will pick some darker, less pastel colors.
I have to pick out at least 9 more patterns to try for this challenge.  Part of my goal was to not only make at least 12 preemie hats, but to try using different patterns for each one.  So far I have 5 hats from 5 patterns, and this is only the 3rd month, LOL.  preg_replace('/(.{19})/', '$1 ', 'www.crochetpatterncentral.com') has a whole section of preemie patterns!

preg_replace('/(.{19})/', '$1 ', 'www.savethechildren.org') is the official website for the organization (i think...) so if anyone is having trouble finding a place to send their hats, look on this site!

Your hats are so adorable.
I am a knitter and knit baby hats on and off...they are so much fun (and quick and easy)
I'm sure I'll have made 12 through the year.
What a wonderful goal!!

I saw your post a while back and thought what a neat idea you were onto. I was working on a scarf at the time but was left with just enough yarn to make one of the patterns you chose. I had to improvised with the ribbon for lack of one but once I find one that matches i'll be set.  Smiley One of my closest friend is having a baby in a couple of months and will be able to wear the very first baby hat I made.

Oh, I hope everyone continues this thread. I love to see al the adorable little hats. It makes me think of my baby's hat that we got from the hospital. The one I had made him was too big. But the one we got made him look like a little glowworm when he was all swaddled up. Thinking about that hat brings back memories of the 'turtle face'. Ahhhhhh. Thanks for all your work. Smiley
