i got married in last feb and in a fit of inspiration decided to sew the dress myself.  Probably this was because i was too intimidated to go to a bridal store.

The dress was inspired from a gown designed by a really great designer in sydney.  However the couture gowns start at $3000 so obviously that wasn't an option for me.  I went to a really great seamstress in melbourne who drafted me a pattern and gave really great instructions.  Also we had to alter the basic design so not to infringe on copyright and also to suit me as the original was bias cut silk which is.... well not the most flattering if you have a few curves here and there.

Dress is made from dupion silk which i just love and even better its inexpensive.  I made a mock up in calico then just went for it.  the curved seams over the bust i found particularly tricky but just kept going.

Over all i was really happy as it was so comfortable and didn't make me feel to OTT as we had a low key family wedding.

If you are considering making your wedding dress I would say definitely go for it but don't be fooled by simple dresses as they can be really hard.  But however I am really a novice but i got through it with a little encouragement and a lot of patience.  Best of all i got something that i was really comfortable in and got lots of great comments on. I got the bottom sandy and wet and it the hem got a bit torn on the way home. But I didn't care because I wanted my wedding dress to be 'worn' and show signs of a happy fulfilled day.

Hope you like.

Cultivate your curves - they may be dangerous but they won't be avoided

Great job! I would never sew a wedding dress, I just don't have that type of confidence in my self. Kudos to you for attempting and succeeding! It looks amazing. Smiley

You're a lot braver than me! Sounds like the most stressful thing in the world  Wink Your dress is beautiful though and it looks very professional!
