Coffee and Cheese Upcycled

This challenge came along at the perfect time since earlier this year I purged our home of gift wrap and gift bags.  I'd been wanting to use more eco-friendly gift wrap for a few years, but the big pile of old gift bags just never got smaller.  I figured if I had no choice, it would be easier to make time to create gift coverings this year.  I had already made a few fabric drawstring bags when my toppling tower of non-recyclable containers inspired me.  So I busted out the glossy Mod Podge and some fabric from my stash and set to work.



I choose the Laughing Cow Cheese boxes and General Foods International Coffee tins for our gift card gifts this year (not everyone got handmade gifts this year, but at least the boxes were handmade!). 


For the coffee tins, I Mod Podged fabric around the body, overlapping the top and bottom.  Once dry, I took a razor blade to the top, cutting just underneath the rolled tin top so that the plastic lid would fit.  Sorry, no pictures of this, it was a two-handed project.

For the Laughing Cow boxes, I took a few approaches to the fabric application layout.  I tried putting on the big circle first, then the smaller side second to cover up the flaps.  I also tried it the other way and folded the big circle edges over without cutting the flaps.  Both worked relatively well, Mod Podge is a beauteous thing.


Everything drying.


Here's the final product with gift certificates in place.

that's a great idea!  I cover old cans in scrapbook paper for my cookie exchange every year, I never thought about fabric, though.  those are sure to be reused by the recipients, they're too cool not to.

Wooo!! Great Idea!! I have MANY of the coffee tins and they are PERFECT size for crayons!! Now that I saw you modge podge fabric to it I will have to get more creative with the crayon boxes!!
