that sounds doable for a big design, like a big heart, and all the heart part is the titles and authors written in red and all around another colour!!!!!  woohoo, this is also time consuming, but more doable and clearer of what the books are!    Now it's the time issue, lol!!!

it would also be visually "tidy" to arrange the books by....color!  When I see that photo, my eyes keep bouncing around from color to color (a blue here, a blue there, red up top, red below)..if the colors (of the covers) were brought together in meaningful groups, it would rest the eye---and make it all seem less 'busy'.

can't wait to see how you got it all rearranged!

p.s. another idea related to curtains or fabric:  Put two c-hooks into the ceiling just in front of the bookshelf and hang one large (or two small) bamboo roller shades.  Mount the cord hook on the wall to the side and you're all set! Roll 'em up for every day, roll 'em down when you want to hide it all. I've done this in two different places, worked great, and bamboo roller shades are very inexpensive (as cheap as $8 each). They are also light-weight enough in the smaller sizes so that you might get away without drilling---a pointed screw-type c-hook will hurt your hand a bit to screw in, but it's do-able.

hehe, this made me laugh because i have the exact opposite problem in my room. the rest of it is a complete disaster, hardly able to walk through it, but my bookshelf is always perfectly arranged. all the books are in alphabetical order by author's last name except the books which arent storys, just information, and they are organized on the bottom shelf by what they are about. for instance, i have my atlas, then my guide books, then my language books by eachother. i also have yearbooks, photo albums and old journals on that shelf too. if you only knew how unorganized i am in every other aspect of my life, you would be as shocked as i and everyone else that knows me is about this.

anyways, i think the idea about covering them and making a pattern would be really cool, but as long as you keep all the clutter and everything that is not a book off of the shelves it will look nice and neat, as i'm sure it already does since you said you already did that.
