I'm not sure how stylish this "wrapping" job is, but it is definitely thrifty and uses one of Canada's renewable resources.  Also, I didn't know about this challenge until after Christmas, so the photos are kind of cobbled together from various relatives.  Sorry.

Back story.  I am THAT auntie.  The one who doesn't have kids.  The one who thinks babysitting is fun for exactly half an hour and only with children who speak in full sentences and can wipe their own butts.  And are well rested and not bratty and not hungry and not shrieky and ... I could go on.  I'm also the one who thinks store bought toys are stupid and you should make your own fun out of wood and string.   Grin  So for gift giving I'm apt to hand out craft supplies, books or sporting equipment.  I do get them fabulous things though, so I can buy their affections and I'll have someone to take care of me when I am old and decrepit.  I don't care if they're just doing it to get my money when I die, quite thrifty of them I think.

Anyway, this year, the oldest niece and nephew were getting snowshoes.  Because snowshoes are AWESOME.  And we've had about 600 metres of snow already this year and yes it is snowing right now too.

Snowshoes being somewhat oddly shaped and difficult to wrap, I planned to sew some bags out of Christmas fabric.  But then I forgot and it was suddenly Christmas morning and the kids were coming over in half an hour and I panicked.  So I called up the brother, told him to make sure the kids were wearing their snowpants and Sorels and I started digging in the back yard.  And came up with this.

Close up

Piles of snow, even those jauntily topped with bows however, are a bit boring.  So I added a yarn maze to follow.  Red for my niece and green for the nephew.  Green doesn't really show up in these pictures though.  Oh well.  It's there, I promise.

The beginning of the maze was the front porch and I made some little Christmas card/tags for each kid.

Brother forgot the snowpants request of course.

I don't have a picture with the "presents" opened because there was a tragic boot in snow accident that resulted in my having to carry the niece through the rest of the maze and then balance with her on my lap while she dug in the snow, and then carry her and the snowshoes back through the huge drifts of snow.   And then I needed a drink and a nap and a chance to forget the whole idea.  Nephew cheated and just ran toward the present when he saw it.  Smart little bugger!

Thanks to those who are still reading and Happy 2009 to you all!

P.S.  I'm getting the niece an ice fishing shack for her 7th birthday in February.  Any wrapping ideas for that?

Okay, that's really weird because I was going to type exactly that! Wowza.

Awesome job, sunspotted - can I be your niece, too? I can wipe my own butt and I don't whine too much. Grin

there's two things i love about this- 1) it's ingenious and free and 2) your gifts are practical.  what good is another plastic action figure that someone is just gonna step on and break?  i am terribly jealous that you've had so much snow!

That's fabulous!  We have enough snow here in Alberta for that, I'll have to remember that for future years, as I have two December babies as well as Christmas!

Thank you everybody.  We've had about 4 more feet of snow since Christmas, so I definitely picked a good year for snowshoes.

AQ, consider yourself niece-dopted.  As long as you promise to outlive me and shovel the porch off when I become too old and feeble to do it myself.  Say, next Tuesday or so?

Another plus - eco-friendly wrapping. Not only does it not leave a trace, come springtime, it'll melt and help plants grow!

I guess that the boot in snow accident just proved even further how useful your gifts were, right?

OMG are you my sister? HaHa I just read your entry to my husband and he said "so when did Melissa move to Canada?"

That is so clever! My favorite part is that you came up with it and pulled it off in less than 1/2 an hour! Great job!

What a clever idea!  Even though it didn't go as planned, I am sure that their present adventure this Christmas will be a memorable one, and that is what makes it special.

Ha, sunspotted this is awesome! I'm THAT auntie too! When a poopie diaper is discovered, it takes me about .0001 seconds to call "not it!" Very clever idea, too bad it didn't quite come off as planned but it never does when the kidlets are involved I guess.

This is why I refuse to work with children and animals.
Okay...not really (lots of both)...but still.

Very awesome....and for the ice fishing gear....how about in a block of ice, with attached ice pick and hair-dryer?

I absolutely love this! Grin And the maze idea makes it even better! I wish I had you for an aunt! Or that I had siblings, so I could be 'that aunt'. Really, this was a fantastic idea. And the boot incident does mean your gifts are very appropriate!

I'm Canadian too, but we don't that THAT much snow in my area. I'm curious what province you are in. (I'm southern Ontario. More people, less snow.)

For the next one, maybe put the key in a block of ice? If they come with keys that is!

Sounds like we have lots of THOSE aunts here on Craftster.  That's pretty awesome.  Thank you all for the kudos and the suggestions for my ice fishing shack.  I think I'm just getting a pop-up one and I don't believe those have keys, but I will have to check.

I'm over here in NW Ontario.  Yes, the same province but a 22 (or more) hour drive away.  We generally have lots of snow, but this is excessive even for us.  Now if the temperature would just get above -25 C we'd be able to actually use all this snow.

My goodness...you are hilarious! My Nana used to do the same yarn ball thing...but she made us wind up the string as we went!

Love the present...snowshoes are so fun & will prevent future boot accidents!
Love the wrapping...so clever!

Ice shack you say? ...I wish you were MY aunt!

LOL - I love it!  I'm "that auntie", too!  And I too disagree with the whole commercialized, plastic, stuffed in commercialized-plastic box junk!!  I'm the one that gets my nieces (1 and 2 years old) construction paper and scissors and glue and glitter, watches their faces light up, gets hugs and kisses for the awesome new liberty-laiden-gifts, and runs for the hills while my SIL has to deal with the mess.   Wink

I live just east of Lake Erie, so I have lots of the renewable resource, too.  I'll have to keep this one in mind for when they get a little older.  I love to snowshoe, and I think it'd be great to get the girls to do it with me.  But I think I'll wait till they've gotten to the "wiping their own butts" stage before we go there.   Cheesy

Three cheers for the auntie with the creative/thrifty/ingenius streak!   Cool

i'm totally in agreement with you when it comes to kids. we don't get much snow here in Portland, but if we did, i'd be out burying the gifts in no time, this is freaking great.
