I don't know what she was thinking unless she was just wanting to get her friend some business.

Anyone remember that old Monty Python sketch?

"Doctor! My brain hurts!"

"Oh! It'll have to come out then."

Monty Python is awesome! Cheesy

Here's one for you: "Leave the sewing to people who know what they're doing!"
I was showing a friend the wallet I made for my boyfriend. A nosey customer, who was a woman in her late 40s/early 50s, told me that then said "That wallet will probably fall apart the first time he uses it because you don't know what you're doing! Young people these days don't have a clue about sewing or anything like that! They see stuff on the internet and think they can do it too!"
**facepalm**

Oh god  Roll Eyes  i mean i can see where she's coming from because i was just having a conversation the other day about people on pintrest that have a picture of some hand crafted piece of furniture with a caption like "who would pay $50 for this? i can diy it with hot glue and cardboard" but she shouldn't be assuming that you're one of those people right off the bat

Seriously? Roll Eyes Maybe if you know what you're doing you can make something nice from cardboard. My bf made himself a jewelry box out of cardboard. But he compressed several layers of it with a heavy duty glue and more or less made it like wood.

The thing of it is, I had the wallet RIGHT THERE and it looks really nice. I even had people wanting to buy it off me, thinking I had bought it somewhere.

When I was working at a big-box fabric/craft store, we had a woman ranting that her baker wanted $70 to decorate a series of cake teires. To quote 'How hard could it be? I can do it cheaper!'

She ranted and crashed through the store for nearly an hour after having driven 45 minutes from home, stayed 15 minutes past closing and then had to drive 45 minutes back.

The total cost of her 'cheaper fix'?

$145.

As for 'young people today' woman? Maybe she need a hormone shot to help with 'old people today' syndrome. (ps. I am close to her age so...)

Not everyone has someone to teach them how to sew or crochet or can or grow a garden or weld or raise a kid.

I am self taught, first with embroidery, then crochet, knit, and sewing. I've made my living for the last 3 and a half years from these skills. Did some of my first things make it long? No. But if some jerk had said something like that to me, I may not have tried to better my skills.

That was so much cheaper and easier! Roll Eyes

Thing is, my mom is in her mid-50s and I learned to sew by watching her and my late grandmother. But that woman didn't know me so she didn't know that. She also doesn't know that I do a little "stress test" on my sewing projects: I grab them close to the seams and pull, testing the strength of my stitches. If it comes apart, I didn't have good stitches so I start over from square one.

My sewing projects don't fall apart now but a few years ago, when I first picked up sewing seriously, my projects came apart easily and didn't last long. Now they hold up and I show them off proudly!
But if I had met her about four years ago, I probably would have packed up my sewing machine along with my fabric stash and never sewn again!

People like that woman talk about how younger people aren't into crafts but they're the ones who drive the younger people away. They do it by belittling them and telling them that their projects are crap. Yes, the first few projects anyone makes will probably be crap but if that person just gives up, he/she will NEVER get better!
