despite all the horrible things i read about this patten, i decided to give it a go.  it was just too sweet to pass up.  i think it took about 8 hours, including 3 hours spent cutting out all the pieces and the foam.

here is the little fishy

unfortunately, the cats are too scared to go into it, as it's a pretty tight opening

when zombie finally got brave, layla jumped on it and scared him  Roll Eyes

i don't think i could have found more perfect fabric!  i was so pleased

and to clarify, all the negative things you've read are pretty much true.  i felt the directions were pretty easy to follow (my first pattern in MANY years) but the layers of foam are impossible to sew through.  it was way more easy to hand sew than it was to try to feed all that through my machine with tissue paper.  yes, i hand sewed the whole thing.  i love the cats that much, hehe.  my only complaint is that it's too small Sad   i hope they will squeeze in someday, but for now my 7 and 11 pound monsters will probably just jump on it.  no difference though, as it's a pretty funny conversation piece!

Thanks for posting about this pattern.  I picked this up this year to make one for my sisters cats and never got around to it.  Yours is awesome!

Haha!  Oh geeze, I totally agree with you -- my cats would be too terrified to go into it!  I suppose its one of those things you have to condition a kitten to like when they're young.

This is awesome! My kitten would be in this before i finished it! My older cat (looks just like your lady, btw) would just sniff it and never look at it again.
I am so gonna be on the lookout for this pattern!

that fabric is awesome! I think the too small for most grown cats thing is pretty true of the pattern. I kept resisting the urge to get this pattern myself because I have something like this at home that my partner bought for the cats and they snub it like crazy. We've moved it all about the place but nothing. Fickle things these cats! But that is adorable!

WOW!!  This is amazing.  I cannot decide if my cat would like it or not.  She does like cave-like environments  Smiley  Such a cute cat bed.  Nice work.

If you left it out for them to investigate at night or when no one is home I bet you would be surprised. Put their favourite toy or a treat in it and see if they will make the move. Sometimes its the smell too. If you comb your cats, try putting a bit of the combed out fur in it to scent it-then it will smell like them.

Just an idea-my cats are for the lack of a better word, retarded! My alpha male likes to sleep INSIDE gift bags, doesn't matter if there is a gift in there or not! What a surprise to walk by the Christmas tree and have him JUMP out at you! The other one, the female, well that would take too much energy! lol

Love the work you did on the fish bed!

My fiance's mother made this for his two cats... I think they actually used it for a bit... then decided they'd rather lay on it then go in it. She used plain fabrics, but it came out really cute... yours is adorable and you did a FANTATSIC job!

So, I guess my 18 pound cat (His name is Jabba The Cat) probably couldn't even fit his FACE into it. (He's not fat, just big-boned  Roll Eyes )

I would make one just to have around the house, too!  I have a friend with 4 cats that I was thinking of making this for, but her kitties are on the .... larger side so I dont think they would fit in there.

Nice job!  I have this pattern and haven't gotten around to doing it ...but now I see it...it looks A LOT smaller than they put it in the picture on the front!  I agree with what a previous poster said...I'd like to have it have it around the house! It's tooo cute and nice fabric choices

So my question is....if you enlarged the pattern do you think it might kinda lose its shape or is the foam stable enough to handle it?  Fabulous job by the way - maybe you just need to get a new kitten to fit in there.   Cheesy

I have been thinking about making this thing for a while now but I haven't yet because my Jerry Cat is 19 pounds and I was afraid I would go through all the work and he wouldn't fit.  I know now not to do it.  Thank you!  Great job on your fishy.  The fabic is so perrrrrrfect.

Wow, you did a great job! I made one 2 years ago, but it didn't turn out even half as good as yours! And of course none of my 2 cats ever used it  Angry! Hopefully yours will use it in time!

thanks for all the kind comments!

in the pic where zombie is squeezing in there was a treat in there (the only reason he'd try) then i tried to coax him in by pushing his butt, no luck  Cheesy

i think the front of the pattern must be photoshopped bc that white cat looks gigantic!  i don't know if making the pieces bigger would work - it is super sturdy as is, so possibly!

I love the fabric!  Sorry the cats don't like it, but a toy holder is a great idea!  Easy to tidy up, and looks nice.  Just wondering - did you try a heavy duty needle with the foam (denim or leather)?  I like this idea for a gift for my sister, and I can usually sew through anything, but I'm not sure how many layers of foam you are referring to.  I have a regular sewing machine, nothing fancy, but I've sewn leather and 1 layer of foam before.  Is it craft foam?  Or could you use that "memory" foam that you can buy for the tops of mattresses?  That stuff squishes down flat when you sew it, then springs back.  Thanks for sharing!

OMG I bow down to your greatness lol ! I tried this pattern a few years ago and gave up half way thru. Its still in a big trash bag in the closet. I didnt even try to hand sew it. Your amazing!  Maybe I will try to get it out cause I remember I spent a TON of money on fabric and foam. Yours is Great!

Ive had the pattern for awhile now... With hearing all the things about the pattern, and the woman at the sewing store telling me I needed alot of patience for it I havent attempted it yet.
I have absolutly no patience haha

Ive heard about it being small, but I do have a very small female who loves getting into small spaces.

One day I know I will attempt this, just because its so darn cute!

Im glad to see how yours turned out.

Even if your cute kitties don't use it, it is indeed a darling decoration. And shows people you live in a cat home!  Smiley

Wow. Excellent job on the hand sewing. I actually like to hand sew but sewing this project was quite a task!

What we do for our kitties! Smiley

Your feedback on this pattern is really useful.  I've been considering this pattern for a long time, but just wasn't sure.  If I do go for it I'll have to try to blow it up so my big boy could fit in it.  It really looks good!

Obviously you did this pattern a while ago, But do you (or someone else) happen to have the pattern still? I'm just looking to try it out. I was also relieved to know that it is possible to do this without a sewing machine...I'm kinda lacking in that department.

This IS cute.... But I can't believe they publish this for the average sewing machine! It was a struggle from the first stitch! I had a leather shop sew the layer around the mouth and did the rest by hand! There should be a RED warning on the package that this cannot be completed on a sewing machine! The foam is very expensive and would be a shame not to finish it! WHAT A STRUGGLE!
