I've been knitting forever, but I've most recently got into socks... And just out of pure curiousity- why on the heel flap it it nearly always k1 sl1 on the right side? In most patterns I've seen thats the stitch used... I'm sure there's good reason, but for the life of me I can't figure it out... can anybody help? Huh

I think it just makes the heel a little thicker so it doesn't wear through so quick.

I agree with the above poster. I read somewhere (knitty, perhaps?) that it makes the sock cushier, thus providing more comfort, and a more durable sock. The heel really rubs a lot against both shoes and the ground, so it likely wears out quickly without a tighter, thicker stitch.
