When I stumbled on the Swirls Cap by Sophia Kessinger (free pattern on Ravlery), I knew I'd found the perfect Christmas present for my little sister. She said her favorite color is brown, and so I worked this up in Berroco Cuzco (so soft! And thicker than worsted, so I used a size larger hook than the pattern required) and picked out some silver buttons from my LYS, and voila! She loves it! She's especially fond of wearing it tilted to one side:

Detail of the side:

The swirls are made with FPDC's. Now I'm modeling:

And of course my boyfriend wants one for himself, now:

Comments, critiques, and constructive criticism welcome!

Thank you! I was very happy with it. Feel free to read my comments on my project on Ravelry - they might be helpful (I'm antarcticraft there, too). I also used a size larger hook, which I forgot to mention initially, because the Berroco Cuzco yarn is a bit thicker than worsted. I'm glad I did, because otherwise the hat would have been too small for my sister, I think.

That's very good to know, since I just went to look for my 4.5 and can't find it.   Sad  I just did a major organization on all my craft stuff so maybe it got lost in the shuffle... but anyway I don't have a yarn that quite suits this project the way I picture it, so I'll probably end up at Joann's tomorrow!  Yay for vacation...

have you got the link handy for this? I have two very label conscious (sp?) family members - sister and cousin - who would love this (and would never let on I made it, but heck, its awesome!)
Good work on the hat, it looks like something Id find at the Mall!
Is the peek lined with anything? or just pure crochet?

bubblegum_phoenix - it's a Ravelry Free Download, so I didn't link (because you have to be a Ravelry member). But if you're a member, you can see it here:

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/swirls-cap

Or just search for "Swirls Cap" on Ravelry.

The hat is crocheted all in one piece minus the top flap of the brim, which is then crocheted on (the result looks like an open duck bill). Then you cut a piece of plastic canvas for the brim (which I took to mean the cross-stitch plastic) to match, and crochet the brim closed.

I checked her blog and it's not one of her free downloads, so I think that's the only way you can get it. Smiley It's definitely worth it to join, though! She's got some other great patterns, too.
