I'm in!  I just taught myself to crochet not too long ago, and have had a blast making snowflakes.  I've been wanting to do an afghan, and this is a great structure for it!  Hopefully it'll provide some de-stressing crafty fun for what is sure to be a stressful year.  (Changing jobs, moving across the country...all in the planning stages)   Cheesy

+1! is it okay if i jump in too? i haven't done nearly enough crochet recently, or craftster-ing, so this should help on both counts!

is it any coincidence that the word yearn is one letter away from being yarn?

This is a great new year's resolution for me:  learn to crochet.  I have a book, and I've done some little squares, but I think a 12" square is more appealing--provided I can make a consistent 12" size!  On my smaller blocks, sometimes they were the same size, but mostly they weren't (then I'd remake them with the SAME hook and come up with a totally different size--very frustrating).

My other problem is deciphering the directions...  I guess that becomes easier with practice, huh?

It does, usually  Cheesy the good thing about a CAL is there are plenty of people to offer help & advice when we get stuck  Grin

I'm so excited that so many folks will be joining in, especially the new crocheters! I will be finishing up my square tonight, and I'll try to post the pattern as soon as the New Year rolls around... I have a feeling I'll be crocheting as the clock hits midnight Wink

And, as I selected the patterns, I tried to pick patterns that didn't look too difficult, but could still teach me a thing or two. I still call myself a beginner, but I'm probably more of an intermediate now. I'm still a little intimidated by some things, but this CAL has helped to build  my confidence.

I wasn't going to join this year, but.........

I gave my 2008 afghan to my parents for Christmas. When my sister saw it she said, "Erin, did you make that afghan? You make me sick! That is the most beautiful afghan I've ever seen".

She seriously meant it. Now I want to make her one!  Cheesy

CraftADDchick, I love the idea of you making the square and showing it when you post the pattern. It just adds to the "new square excitement".

Excellent! And, it's so awesome when someone appreciates handmade stuff Wink

I'm doing it for 2 reasons, mostly:
1) To make sure that the pattern makes sense and isn't too difficult
2) To make sure I get them all done, for once Grin

But, you're right- it does give the month a nice kick-off Wink
