I had big plans this year for finishing off all of my Christmas presents with time to spare, but it didn't quite turn out as perfectly as I had planned Smiley

It took me until 8pm on Christmas Eve to finish off this Weekender Bag. The Christmas Eve event started at 7pm so I was a little bit late haha.

I used Amy Butler's Weekender Bag pattern and her Lacework in brown fabric:

And brown piping:

The inside is a decorator weight fabric from Ikea. Since the outside fabric was a regular cotton, I wanted to make it more durable. There is also a layer of heavy weight iron on interfacing adhered to the lining:

One modification that I made was to lengthen the straps. It's for a relative who is going on a trip in the New Year so I thought that it'd be easier to lug around with longer straps. Also, I split the pockets on the front (by sewing a seam up the middle) so that there would be 6 pockets on the outside, instead of 4.

Finished just in the nick of time, but I'm happy with how it turned out in the end Wink

I've heard the same, but everyone's bags always looks so gorgeous. I love the fabric of this bag, it makes for a great shabby chic look.

This is fantastic! You did a wonderful job with the piping, too. I like your modifications - I think longer straps would be perfect for a carry-on bag.

Thanks!

Beautiful Bag.... I hear that her patterns are really complicated.. I am to scared to try.

I like the way that her patterns are written. For some reason, I find "regular" patterns (you know the patterns you can buy at any craft store) really difficult to follow. The terminology confuses me so I end up either putting the project on hold (usually for a loooong time haha), or just trying to finish it on my own without the instructions. I've tried two of Amy Butler's patterns (this one and the hat one) and found both easy to follow. The most difficult part of the project is probably sewing the zipper in, but it's more because you have to pin it pretty well, other than that, it's just alot of straight sewing and curves Wink

That is gorgeous!  Am I correct in thinking- you gave this as a gift?  Wow, if so, what a LUCKY ducky recipient!

Yes, it was for my Mom. I was trying to handmake some of my gifts this year and thought that this would be one she could use for awhile!

I wish my handbag-making skills were up to that standard, then I'd never have to buy another bag in all of my life!

You did a great job!  Your bag looks fantastic and I bet your mom was thrilled! This pattern is in my stash and I just haven't felt like tackling it. I tried one other Amy Butler pattern and it didn't go so well. I guess I just got to get back on the horse that threw me and give it another go!  Grin

If I can do it, lots of people can do it. I'm a beginning to intermediate sewer. The only "tough" thing about the pattern was sewing through tons of layers. If you're patient, you can make a bag that looks awesome! Mine isn't perfect but I get compliments anytime I bring it out.

Your bag looks fantastic!  And I'm with you on the longer straps - I so prefer to be able to sling something over my shoulder if need be.  Anywho, bravo!   Cheesy

Great bag! It was worth being late to the party. I'm sure your relative was quite forgiving once it was received.

Absolutely phenomenal.  You've inspired me to purchase this pattern, I should have it next week!  I'm still a beginner with my sewing machine though, so I'm going to try a simpler tote bag pattern before I even try to tackle this.  Way to go!

I have this pattern too, but every time I look at it, it seems really confusing. You've done an amazing job.  I may have to look at my pattern again!  Beautiful.

It's huge! I took it away for a weekend and was able to put jeans, clothes for 2 days, a sweatshirt, blowdryer, flip flops and more inside. I'd actually say that it's too big to use as an everyday bag, but well suited for a weekend one.
