made this for my new years party last night, was a big hit...

Me too. I made my second batch of the season and brought it to the New Years' party last night. I told them simply, "It's Christmas Crack - try it!" and they did, and then made that "OMG this is SO GOOD" face. "You're not kidding!" was their response. A big hit.

Soda crackers? I'm trying to think of what else they might be called. They are white crackers without very much flavor, people eat them when they're sick and nothing else sounds good. I've also made these successfully with graham crackers. I think any square cracker that doesn't have too much flavor would work well. (round crackers would probably let too much of the toffee drip off)

They look like this, if it helps:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltine_cracker

I know some folks in the UK have found them at Aldi, if you have one in your area.

Somebody earlier in the thread tells which kind of crackers works in the UK. Sorry, I don't have time right now to go back and look! Good luck!

(And I used pretzels once and pretzel chips by Ritz once...yum! That's what I'll use from now on.)

oh I will definitely be making loads of this this year, the easiest christmas present ever. Especially since I have found a good saltine substitute

I tend to sprinkle some big salt crystals on top, to oomph up the saltiness..but I mighthave already said that!"

I love that idea edelC!  I just added it into the recipe as a footnote.  Can't wait to try that this year!  Cheesy

It's in the oven right now!  I'm doing a practice batch to see if I want to give it out for Christmas this year.

edelC, thanks to your lovely help and suggestions over the years, I was able to go back and update the original post of this thread.  Now all the suggestions and alternatives that people have offered over the years can be found there too, so people don't have to read all 20 pages of comments!
