I want to emphasize that I take no credit for this. This hand-linked chain maille gorget was made by my wonderful fiancee. We participate in medieval reenactment with the Society for Creative Anachronism, and as part of it we engage in battles with other reenactors wearing full armor. Since my neck is too small for most regular gorgets (metal or leather collars that protect the throat), my talented boy made me this chain maille for my helmet armed with nothing but pliers and optimism. :]

We bought the helmet, he just made the chain maille. I love it! Cheesy Thanks for looking

That's a lot of links!
It looks like he did a really good job.
DId you have to use a specific gauge of wire for it to be SCA Legal?
I know the plate armor has to be a certain thickness, but I've never known anyone who makes their own chain.

^_^

I hope it holds up to many many fights!

Sweet!  Did he make the rings, too, or buy them premade?  Are the rings aluminum or steel?  I'm not sure what the requirements are for SCA, but if looking cool is a requirement, you've got it hands down!

The rings are premade, they come in a spiral and he cut them into rings and used pliers to close the gaps. I am pretty sure that they are aluminum, but I don't know what gauge it is. Sorry I'm so unhelpful! I'll ask him next time I see him.

Oy, the spirals are the easy part, the cutting is the hard part! I likes it much! Smiley

Thanks! p.s. I was wrong. They're steel. Aluminum, he tells me, would crumple in seconds if hit.
