Over the summer I took a couple fibers courses and in my weaving course we wove a gauze fabric that we then nuno felted on top of it.
One of the objectives of the lesson was to create a form or multiple forms in an installation.
I chose the installation.

Here is Specimens:

The forms were felted then dyed and then shiboried to create the altered forms.
The three with backgrounds are quilted.

porto type
the background is woven and then nuno felted with the form sewn on top.

That's one of the most inspiring pieces I've seen in a long time.
My favorite part is the blue fleshy part.

Thank you!
I made these in a weaving course at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. (sorry viltk)

The skin and textures came about buy felting dyed cheese cloth and bits of yarns such as rayon. I created the dreads with fluffy dry wool at the fat end and placed them on wool before felting with the cloth and yarns.
Then I felted the pieces using the pastic sandwich meathod or felted some of the shapes with a rock in the center of my wool.  Cut openings and felted some more.
Then I dyed over everything with acid dyes, rinsed out and tied in balls and bobbles to create the growth like forms and threw them in the dryer. Untied and pulled out the balls and the forms stay in the felt.

I half expect to see captions telling us what new sea creature was just discovered.  They'd have to be tropical and salt water for their vibrant colors.  Grin

shiboried?  Huh

I think I made that word up. I used shibori or tie dye techniques in manipulating the felt. Basically you take a piece of damp felt and tie rocks or stitch pleats in it and then throw it in the dryer and it will felt down further and hold those shapes.
