Well now, since this is my first post ever (Cry), I'll introduce myself. My name is Kelli. I made a bed/hammock....thing for my 2 newest additions to the family. My new female dumbo rat, Vaca, and my new female hairless rat, Mumo. I made a sweater for one of my males, but it was too small, so it will be up later. Anywho, onto the subject of this post. I figured that since Mumo is hairless, I should make warm things for her. So I thought of the first thing, a bed. I had bought one yesterday, but they tore it up.  Undecided Onto the pictures!

Excuse the whiteness, the flash was on. For the inside I used an old sweater I found. Not too sure what it is. But it's very soft and warm. The outside is an old sheet that has holes in it from my best friend losing pins and whatnot in her mattress.

I was originally going to put one whole strap on each corner, but figured this would be easier. If they grow I can move it up from the bottom more.

And now some of them playing in it...

Mumo.^

Investigation time...^

"Let me in too!" Vaca was thinking...^

That's a great hammock!

I don't want to sound preachy, but it looks like your rats live on cedar bedding and that can cause respiratory problems and even skin problems for them.  Pine has the same problems.  Aspen bedding is only a little more expensive and much much safer.

Your rats are super cute!

Yeah I know. But they don't live and sleep on it. I started using different kinds for the ones who do. Smiley

I must say your rats are adorable they make me miss having rats. But that's a good thing. Smiley

The hammock is wonderful and I"m sure they will love it! I was always afraid to make my previous rats hammocks as I thought they'd pee on it. lol (I had a hairless too)
Very nice job! It's obvious they love it.

Well, they did like it. They liked it so much they chewed it all up.-.-
Oh well, the bed I bought them hasn't been too chewed up yet.

lol. You've got chewers! I miss having rats too but my partner hates them. hopefully with a little time they'll stop chewing up the beds. Do you have a lot of stuff for them to chew on? food treats, chew bars, and toys? My chewer stopped chewing so much when I starting putting in more chew treats/toys and changing the toys out for different things every week.

You could check and see if bitter apple spray is safe for rats. I know you cna use it for ferrets. It's safe but has a nasty taste. You could spray it on anything you don't want them to chew.

Good luck!

As soon as I saw this, I immediately thought "That's really cute and nice for them to use until they chew it down."

I lost a NICE pair of sandals to pet-rat-chewing, among other things.

When I had my rat, she was allergic to all kinds of bedding, and I definitely didn't want to try and give her cedar, so I actually took old clothing scraps and cut up for her to use as bedding, along with some old newspaper and magazines that I tore into strips. For the litter box area (or the catch tray underneath), I used Yesterday's News cat litter from Petco. It's recycled and not nearly as dusty as the real thing. I also used Yesterday's News with my ferret when I had him. I don't think it actually works very well for cats, but it's great for rodents.

Ah, the days of small rodents as pets. Now I'm just down to a dog and a cat.
