There is a bit of a story behind this project. My hubby is an avid hunter, which I don't mind at all as long as it is done with respect and we eat and use as much of the animal as possible, but........ I refuse to have a dead animals whole head hanging in my house! Hubby and I have went rounds and rounds on this subject. So after a friend showed me some wonderful examples of felt taxidermy on Etsy I took it upon myself to make a deer mount for the hubby for his Holiday gift! I'll let him hang this one up for sure!
I didn't have a deer head pattern so I used a donkey plush pattern for the head, changed the shape a bit, and made the rest with my own imagination.

The mounting board is a really thin chip board cut and painted with some bias tape around the edge to neaten it up.

The eyes are safety eyes with felt backs.

The horns are fully poseable as well.

Sorry for the not so great pictures, we're having a blizzard here!
I can't wait to see the look on Hubby's face when he opens up this gift!
Thanks for looking!

Crafts make us feel rooted, give us a sense of belonging and connect us with our history.  Our ancestors used to create these crafts out of necessity, and now we do them for fun... to express ourselves.

Don't take this the wrong way but...

It is so wrong on so many levels and yet so right.

It immediately reminded me of the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Special so I pictured Rudolph with his head cut off on the wall...that was the part that made it seem oh so wrong to me...but I adore this project...and I happen to find taxidermy interesting.  Bizarre huh?  I think your husband will love it.  And I really hope you didn't take the wrong part the wrong way.

Off-Topic: If anyone finds themselves weirdly fascinated with taxidermy, you might want to check out this bizarre little novel:

The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs by Jack Gantos

On an unseasonably warm Easter Sunday, a young girl named Ivy discovers a chilling secret in the basement of the Rumbaugh pharmacy across the street from the hotel where she lives with her mother. The discovery reveals a disturbing side to the eccentric lives of family friends Abner and Adolph Rumbaugh, known throughout their small western Pennsylvania town simply as the Twins. It seems that Ab and Dolph have been compelled by a powerful mutual love for their deceased mother to do something outrageous, something that in its own twisted way bridges the gap between the living and the dead. Immediately, Ivys discovery provokes the revelation of a Rumbaugh family curse, a curse that, as Ivy will learn over the coming years, holds a strange power over herself and her own mother.

Interesting. The paperback cover shown on Amazon looks NOTHING like the hardback cover of the book that i read.
