Last year I made my daughter a playmat with some posable felted characters & a plantable veggie garden, seen here
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=221517.msg2389270#msg2389270
The playmat idea was inspired by a thread on another forum & this particular playmat
http://growinginpeace.wordpress.com/handmade-love/
&  then this blog
http://soozs.blogspot.com/2007/10/everything-in-its-place.html

That playmat had many, many hours of play (I logged a few, as well). I knew I wanted to make her a water themed mat & this challenge bumped up my project... I started with the mermaid, which is needle felted wool over wire with doll fabric over her body
next, the octopus which was based on the one from Wild & Wonderful Fleece Animals by Linda Carr
The seahorse was my favorite & will surely be improved upon. It's a felted sweater which was machine sewn into the basic form, then needle felted... it is somewhat posable but the sweater was too bulky. All of the details are going to be worked on, I love needlefelting.
The seaweed is various scraps. Most of this was salvaged from scraps of all of my first projects, there's a lot of reminiscing in here. I know I want to add more before I give it to her on the solstice, and once I see her playing with it, I'm sure I'll have even more ideas. It's also versatile, she also has a collection of whales & other sea animals sized just right for it, as well as a commercially made pirate ship/pirates(shown). My daughter also has a collection of shells that she'll have fun running up the coasts & & rocks, too... I love this. I'm working on something for the land side, too.

I'm such a poser  Tongue

What do you think she hears?

It's very easy to pick up your whole scene quickly, even tying it off to contain the little stuff.

I have more to say but am running out of time. Admittedly, I'm a techno dope so posting this has taken far too long. I'm using new camera/software so I am really looped out. Next deadline is approaching, last minute trip TO the gulfcoast which is not the breeze it was before chil'ren.  Bleary eyed & signing off!

Thank you! I really wanted it to be pretty,  she's really into girly, pretty things. Hope she likes it, it's so hard to compete w/ commercialized toys these days! They can do just about anything.

I really need to make a cozy little shelter , maybe a large shell out of paper mache . And some starfish, and a top for the mermaid, I can think of lots to add, really.

this is such an awesome idea! natural toys for kids would bring out their creativity more, i'd think (then again, i dont have kids!) better than putting them in front of a tv!

do you have boys? i think a jungle theme would be cool (im just squealing at the thought of a lil leopard!!) or even a space theme! haha anyway amazing job!

oh, one more thing...how do you get started with felt? know of any good books that i could start out with?? thanks!

Sad update: She got this last Sunday, played with it for 2 hours.... then put it away and hasn't played with it since. Then Christmas happened & she got a sea of store-bought toys. There's just no competing with plastic, I guess.
I'm hoping to trade out the mermaid with her so I can have it back & bead her tail.

So, thanks for all of the comments! At least somebody liked it!

shara-duhh~ I found all of my info on felt online, here & there... the Warm Fuzzies book gives some good info on using felted sweaters. I have girls, the jungle & space mat ideas are good ones, tho. I plan to make a farm mat for my 16mo. daughter.

I wouldn't give up on her--it's way too awesome for her to ignore for too long.

Maybe you could take a family trip to an aquarium sometime to spark her interest in under-sea life?   Tongue

This is SOOO awesome!!!  I am making this, i have 2 boys, but i think even they will appreciate a "beach scene" - we live on the gulf coast, there is no such things as enough of the beach for me.
