I wanted to make the
Best Gift Ever for my adorable baby niece (Wren) who just turned one year old. Her mama's family is chock-full of amazing quilters, and I knew I couldn't compete with that.
Having seen a few examples of felt name books on Craftster and elsewhere, I decided I would make one for her! And I did! I added her middle name since her first name is so short.
First I had to wait for her to be born and named. Then I started the book! I chose my animals that matched the letters and "drew" (read: scrawled) out designs in a notebook.
Then I started assembling it! Next, I learned to embroider. That is not the order I would recommend, in retrospect. Ah well. Glue, stitch, glue, stitch, trace, cut, stitch. After getting through the majority of the book, I messed up the cover not once, not twice, but three times. Boo. Finally, this is what I came up with for
Wren Elise:
One goal was to make it bright and colorful. Another was to have lots of texture so it was stimulating for her, so I added ribbon and googly eyes, buttons and rick rack. Here are a few close-up shots of the stitching

They live a few hundred miles away but came up for Thanksgiving, so I had the chance to give it to her last week. Her reaction seemed positive:
