Last March a friend of mine passed away suddenly. This summer his widow was asking if anyone wanted his dress shirts (man there were a ton) I asked for them and when she replied that they would in no way fit my hubby I suggested to her I would make quilts out of them for her, their three daughters and his brother.  All five of these quilts were made with Kevin's dress shirts and the sashing in each is a pair of khakis. All seemed very pleased and surprised by the final product. I am fortunate enough to still have my dad around but some days only a 'dad' hug will do.  I figured this was one way for me to give these you women a little bit of that.

the brother's quilt

the wife's quilt

the oldest daughter's quilt

the middle daughter's quilt

the youngest daughter's quilt

all five on the line

i also tried to fit the backing fabric to personalities... and all five have an extra block sewn to the back with a pocket on... some where to stash something sweet or an extra kleenex...and no they are not all sewn on straight or level.

Your thoughtfulness makes me misty-eyed.  These quilts are really beautiful.  This is such a lovely thing to do.  They will cherish these quilts for many years to come.

These are some of the most beautiful and inspirational quilts I've seen so far on craftster.  They're not complicated designs, but they take a little bit of the past and become something comforting for this family.  Very well done, Sloth.

(Also, nice contrasts, and 5 quilts since March?  Impressive)

thanks all for your comments... i found this project very therapeutic for me.  kev was my first grown up friend who died of a grown up cause. suddenly. i worked through a lot of weird emotional stuff making these.

(and about the 5 since march...i got the fabric at the end of july...i delivered the last week of august... i can be single minded and prolific...

These are really beautiful.  I love how so many different fabrics were brought together, and seem to belong together, like a family.  I'm glad you were able to do something so beautiful out of something tragic.  I'm truly sorry for your, and the family's loss.  And I'm sure your quilts will bring back cherished memories for them.
