So this is Denyse Schmidts Big Zig pattern from her quilting book. I modified it a bit to include some patterned fabric from Heather Ross's Lightning Bugs and other Mysteries. The solids are Kona Cottons. I made this for my youngest sister. Her 18th birthday was on thanksgiving this year and i was very excited to give this to her, i just love how it came out.

So here is the quilt top

and here is the quilt loaded up on the longarm. This is the very first quilt i have done on a long arm machine. I took a training class and quilted it here duck soup quilts]

here are some pics, pre binding, right off the longarm. I created the quilting pattern free hand on the fly. i'm pretty happy with how it came out!

and here it is done and washed!

My local embroidery/sewing machine dealer has a long arm that they have classes in and then rent it out for $10 an hour(I am thinking that they are probably not selling a whole lot of those babies!) But anyhoooo.... How many hours did it take to quilt it when all was said and done?  I am so curious!
I am going to be making a few rather large quilts in the upcoming months and am wondering if I should do them in sections and then quilt them together or if I should rent out the big guy.... after taking the class of course...

It took me about 4 and a half hours on the long arm. It was totally worth it to take the class and learn how to use the machine. It just works so much better than a home machine for a big quilt. ( the quilt is twin sized in case i didn't mention that in my first post)
