old batteries

we have(my husband and i) dozens of used non-rechargable batteries,should we throw them or is there anything to do with?

Ah!  I am very interested in replies to this thread, as I have the same issue.  They appear from no where... I don't understand it.  I did a "search" and could not find any threads to help... I found one about battery disposal, but nothing regarding battery crafts.

Batteries aren't really craft-friendly because they can leak.  The only thing I can think of is to stuff several into an old sock to use as a blugeoning tool for burglars and such.  Hmm.  This is hard.

Hello-

What you can or should do with lead acid (not Ni-Cad rechargeable) batteries probably depends on where you live. Because they can leak and do contain acid and can even explode under certain conditions, they are toxic waste and shouldn't be put it with the regular trash (battery acid in land fills... how awful!  ). The good news is that even "non-rechargeable" batteries can now be recycled. Check with you local city hall (or equivalent) to see whether they will recycle them or have special requirements.

Also with the recycling(only  thing I could come up with too) if you go to www.earth911.org you can do a search for centers near where you live, they also have lots of info on environmental related things.

Hubby says Radio Shack will take them for recycling.  They're technically considered hazardous waste, so you're not supposed to toss them (although I'm sure many people do).  Our local landfill actually has a drop off for them, and many communities have haz-mat collection days.
