I like hand button holes, but they take a substantial weight fabric for them. Sounds like this may be perfect for you. The hand sewn button holes give an expensive tailored look with rounded ends (stitching only) rather than square ends. First, you slit the button hole with a seam ripper or button hole cutter, then you do a button hole stitch around the edges. You can lay a cord along edge (before button hole stitch) to give substance and strength to your stitches. This is common in hand tailored suits.

I can't wait for this pattern! I really want to try it out! And I'd be modifying the collar a bit for ds too, I think! I'd love to make the kids matching coats (within reason of course!)
