Toddler Stocking Cap (not in the round)
«

Being on the Ferry to Washington with another crocheter, I learned how to make a simple stocking cap. Instead of crocheting in the round, you make a chain of 25 or so and then just single crochet back and forth in the back loop only. It looks a lot like you are making a scarf, but when it gets to the length to wrap around a head you slip stitch the ends together. Weave a double length of yard in and out of one end, pull tight, tie and you have a stocking cap with a different look.
It looks better with the bottom rolled up, but to keep my grandsons ears covered we left the edge down, I think next time I will chain more to make it longer there. I also didn't add the recommended pom pom for the top. It might need something there, but I still don't like the idea of a pom pom.

I love this hat, pom pom or not. My son is begging for a hat and I may just have to try it out!

Thanks, if I didn't explain it good enough, please just ask if you need help, but it's a pretty simple concept.

I like the hat! I always like it when things are simple and functional. That'd be a great beginner's project. Thanks for sharing!

OH! I just remembered, if you want it on the diagonal, you need to add 2 stitches at the end of one row and subtract on stitch from the other throughout, always on the same side. I think it will work if you don't do that too.

I started one of these, and made it long enough to wrap around his head.... when I realized that 25 was just not enough for his big ol' noggin. I've frogged it all out and am starting over, with a chain of 35... oh, and I'm doing DCs instead of SCs, so hopefully I'll get it done soon, LOL!! I love the ribbed look though, and hadn't thought of doing a hat from a flat panel like this. Thanks for the idea!

That came out great! I love that chunky yarn and it looks so much better with the edge rolled up. I bet your son loves it!
