I'm FROM alabama, but now I live in Georgia. And I have to recommend the Alabama thrift store in Midfield.

I have a friend who lived in huntsville until recently and I know she was taking a quilting class, so there's some kind of craft scene there. Is there anything you are particularly looking for?

Oh God yes! That one and the one behind the Civic Center in Birmingham. Those are the two best ones in the city.

In Birmingham, I'm currently looking for a salvage type of place (like to get old table pieces or crown molding taken out of a old building) and a great place to find real vintage clothing without outrageous prices. Any ideas?

If there are some great places inside the state but outside my little city, I'm willing to travel.

I don't know of any salvage places in AL, not to say there aren't any, but I know there are some over here in the ATL. There's at least one in the little five points area, and then they sell a bit of that stuff (like mantels and so forth) at the very recommendable lakewood antiques market that is held at the amphitheater the second weekend of every month. And it's only about two hours down I 20 from Bham. but good luck looking in AL first.

I have lived in birmingham all my life and here's my two cents about salvage places and vintage stuff...

Try the Habitat for Humanity building supply outlet.  www.habitatbham.org
They have loads of stuff and the proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity.  The inventory changes all the time and don't go if you are looking for an organized and dust free environment.  All the stuff is leftovers from build projects or donations from suppliers.  They have everything from Pergo, paint, windows, french doors, tile, wallpaper, lumber, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, lighting, you name it.  Now don't get mad at me if you want something on this list and they don't have it.  Like I said... it changes ALL the time.  But it can save you some money.  I got louvered shutters for my two bedroom windows for $30 total.  To have them custom made would have been $250 per window.

Vintage clothing-Try thrift stores out of the metro area and away from colleges.  The Good will and the other thrift on Green Springs are alwayes picked over by college kids and artsy Southside folks who know what to look for.  I recommend the Pell City Thrift Store, Mission Possible on Crestwood, and the trift store out Roebuck Parkway.

Have fun and let us see what you find!!

Happy crafting!
