Harry Potter - Chess Set

For a SWAP I was in, my partner and I did a HP Side SWAP.  My partner seems to be best great friends with her sister and they like to play games, so I tried to come up with something they could do together.  Thus, Harry Potter CHESS!!

The castles I tried to make look like towers, for the knights I put the characters on Broomstricks, the Bishops had wands, and the king/queen had crowns.  Voldemort is the king for the slytherins...thus Nagini

I am SO glad you like it!  I am going to make one for my husband for Christmas.  (Shh!)  But I need ideas for the chess board.... I got the one for the SWAP from the dollar store with plans of painting it....  But now i am not so sure of what to do.. hmmm.

I'm the same way. I got on the HP train WAY late, but I was still looking through and figuring out who was who. Nice work!

Since it is more of a display set so I would go to a building supply store and have a piece of wood cut to the measurement of an actual board. They usually charge a minimal amount to cut it for you. Then, while there look for masking tape the width of the squares in two different colours if you can and gel stain for the squares.

When you get home, strip out the tape on the board. If you want to leave a boarder make sure you keep that in mind when having them cut the wood. Using an exacto knife and a METAL ruler, gently cut along the edges of the tape in both directions. Peel every other square off and then make the decision of what colour to dye or stain the wood. If its a light wood, you could just use black for the opposite sqs. I find gel stains the easiest to work with in small sections. I would use either a foam brush or paper towel starting with small amounts and building up the colour to the dk-ness you prefer.

Peel off the other tape and you are done. If you left a boarder, you could mask off the inside and stain the edge the dker colour too.
