I made a birdseed skull, using a plaster mould I had made previously.
I have been asked why?
I say because I could, the true answer only other craftsters can appreciate......... ....because the idea came to me in a flash, and would not let me rest until I had.
enough of the chatter, onto the pics.

coming out of the mould

its very crumbly, Im not sure how long it will last, but I am watering its head hoping for a grassy mohawk.
It currently resides on my kitchen window sill.
Comments welcomed.

Agreed. When I saw the thumbnail on the front page I was thinking it was a skull covered in maggots as well so I waited until after I ate lunch to look at it. Thank god it's birdseed and not nasty little bugs.

I like it. Make sure you post more pictures if you do eventually get a grass mohawk.

Hi all thanks for the great comments!
I didnt think so many people would think it looked like maggots, interesting.
My plan was to put it out in the garden, but I used glue to stick the seed together and then I worried Id be poisoning the birds, but yes I really liked the idea of having a bird standing on the skull pecking away.  Grin
re how did I stick the seed on, the whole head is solid seed. The last couple of pics show it coming out of a  piece of the mould.
Originally I made a clay skull, made a plaster mould in three parts, tied the mould together, and filled with birdseed mixed with originally clag and then PVA glue. Left it for a few days, then untied the mould and took the skull out.
Im taking it into tafe on Wednesday, but Im thinking of making another more bird friendly version with seed and peanut butter, or egg white to hold it together.
I need to research more.

This is really cool, and I think you should do one with suet or something and put it out for the birds!

That would be a very unusual, bizarre photo - garden birds eating a skull - thats what I would do:)

I dont want to rain on anyone's parade- b/c I think this is awesome and I love to feed the birds- but it's unlikely that you'll have grassy mowhawk....it could happen maybe some of the seed will sprout, but there's not grass seed in bird seed mixes.
Chek out martha- she has lots of tips for suet and could probably lead in a direction that wil let you make something edible.

well maybe real grass wont grow but i know i've had soft grass looking stuff grow  from seeds that fell from the birdseeder so it's possible some sort of mohahk could grow .. if the water can get to the seeds throgh the glue.
I think  this skull is awesome. I want  bird (and squirrel)  friendly one for my backyard Cheesy

I thought it was made of pebbles from the thumbnail (I have a planter made from pebbles molded in some kind of binder), but I agree that birdseed is awesome!  I bet you could use suet instead of glue, chill it thoroughly in the mould, and have an edible version. I have a brain mould that I might use to try this.  If only it wouldn't be a troupe of the sinister local squirrels that would get it instead of the birds.  Sigh.

you should send pictures in to skulladay.blogspot. com.  the artist noah scalin created a skull every day for a year.  after that year, he is doing a year where he posts skulls that other people send in.

Thanks for the great link!
I have been watering the skull, but no greenery yet.
The seed will grow anywhere else tho, lol!
I have found it sprouting in both my kitchen sink and laundry sink, in the washing machine filter and on the varandah.
