I did some screen printing in college, but once you don't have access to the screens or the fancy equipment, it's hard to keep it up.  Well, instead I turned to the DIY world, and made myself a "screen printed" hoodie using a feezer paper stencil!  I added a few sailor stripes that wrap around the front using masking tape, and a fleur de lis from an old stencil I had lying around.

I used my favorite nautical design, the Seven Seas ship.  I be a sailor. Arr.

I just did my first freezer paper stencil a few weeks ago.  You did such a good job.  Mine was really simple.

WOW!
You did such a good job!
How did you do the little speckling? Did you just platter the paint?

To do the splatter effect on the stripes, you can get spray on fabric paint.  it's really neat because you can get gradient and splatter effects.  I bought mine at Miachel's craft store.  I've seen them in fabric shops too.

The ship is my own design, you can find it here  I just printed it and cut it out from the freezer paper with an x-acto.

This hoodie is great, very inspiring.  i've used stencils a lot but thanks so much for the freezer paper tutorial. the stripes are completely "why didn't i think of that", a really excellent design touch, you've got a talent for it!  the fleur-de-lis adds balance.  Thank you for sharing.

Urban Threads, love the tutorial, very nicely done, and your designs, WOW!.  Do you have any tips or tricks on using that fabric spray paint?  I used bright yellow on a royal blue shirt, which I realize may be problem #1.  I had to use so much of the paint that it leaked through the freezer paper (not under the stencil edges, but through the paper itself).  Eventually, I ended up using both spray and non-spray paint, but the area around my stenciled image definitely got colored too.  I'll try to post a picture later to show what I mean.

Yeah, sometimes using a light paint on a dark shirt means you have to go over it many times, but it's still possible.  First, when building up the layers of paint, let each later dry completely between coatings.  It may take awhile, but it should help the shirt from becoming saturated and the paint from leaking through the freezer paper.  Another tip I've heard when you really need to go to town with the paint is to iron another layer of freezer paper on the inside of your shirt, on the other side of the stencil.  That helps lock the fabric between two layers and should leak less.  I hope that helps!

Thank you!  I was in a bit of a hurry when I made my shirt (like 3 hours before the game) and ended up drying it with a hair dryer.  I still got quite a lot of comments about it.  DH was very proud of my shirt.

i love that shirt so cute but i especially love your tutorial!  Ive been wanting to try stenciling with freezer paper.  I figured I could just wing it and see what happens but sometimes that really discourages me if it doesnt work out the first time.  Im going to the store tonight to get spray fabric paint and then Im gonna try this out! THANKS SO MUCH!!!  Grin

I'm loving the stripes and your stencil! Was the material of your shirt 100% cotton? I've been wanting to stencil a hoodie for my friend's birthday, but I can only find the ones that are 50/50 blend of cotton and polyester, and I don't know how the acrylics and textile medium will end up on a blended fabric.

The hoodie was from Target, I'm pretty sure it's a cotton blend.  I imagine most kinds of fabric will work just fine for this project, except delicate things like silk, and rayon doesn't like to be ironed.  Other than that, go to town on it!

Brillant design. Will be purchasing it from your shop shortly for a stencil for my little dude, he loves when we stencil on his clothes!
Gotta ask, did the hoodie inspire the stencil or did you go out looking for something in particular to put that design on? Because they are terrific together Wink those snaps just make it happen.
