I first made these paper-covered pens for the Graduate Student Support Swap.  They were so quick and easy, and the results were so cute, that I just had to make a tutorial.

Materials: clear pens, scissors and a ruler (or a paper trimmer), pliers, double-sided tape, and scraps of *thin* paper. Sadly, this project won't work with your lovely thick scrapbook papers - you need something thinner and more flexible. Wrapping paper or magazine pages (yay recycling!) work well.

Step 1: using your pliers, gently grab the tip of your pen and pull out the ink shaft.

Step 2: Cut your paper into a 4.5 x .5" strip.

Step 3: Wrap strips of double-sided tape along the ENTIRE length of the ink shaft (trust me, you do need to cover the entire thing - you'll end up with a messy seam if you cheat it!). Wrap the tape tightly, pressing out any bubbles.

Step 4: Wrap your paper over the tape, carefully pinching the seams together and overlapping one edge over the other.

Step 5: Slide the ink shaft back into the plastic sleeve.

Ta-da! I hope you like them!

That's such a great idea and so much cheaper than pens that already have pretty designs.

I've always hesitated to buy these pens, not because they don't write well, but because they look so boring and cheap.  This is a super creative way to make them adorable!  Good work!

Thanks, everyone!

Sactownsue, the tip actually comes out a lot more easily than the plug on the other end (I know, it seems like it should be the opposite!).  It's tough to get the plug out without mangling the pen, because there is no easy way to grab it.

Lady Lianalla, I definitely use the word "so" too much, so don't feel bad (haha)!

I wonder if it would work doing the tape and then rolling in glitter or the micro beads? I think I will give it a try!

Quite a bit prettier than your regular pens, and a nice gift too! I wonder if there is something that could be done to the lids... hm...

These are so cute and simple that I'm now trying to think of ways to decorate the lids - it seems a shame to make the pens so pretty and then put those ugly lids back on.

That is such a cute idea. <3 I have the pens and the cute paper but not the double-sided tape. Would a gluestick work for putting the paper on?

Well I kept wondering if you needed the tape at all. Tape keeps it in place, I guess, but you're probably not going to take the end off again, so it can't go anywhere. Maybe you could see what it looked like first without anything? I wouldn't think a glue stick would be strong enough though--I'd probably coat it down with mod podge and let it dry.

But then again, I haven't tried it at all yet, and I use mod podge on everything anyway. It's my default.

I've just come across this thread and it looks neat, but I was thinking, if you don't like the "default" tubes that come with the pens or their lids, or whatever, you might have or be able to find some other tubes for them: I.E. I have some old, clear type pens that aren't great, but the tubes are coloured (and) the end screws off.. I'll try to take pictures in the morning, it's very dark here at the moment(10PM)

EDIT:
Here you go.

Hm, you might be able to skip the adhesive if you roll the paper into a *really* tight tube around the ink shaft.  The only reason for it is to hold the paper in place while you put everything back together.  In my experiments, I found that If I didn't use anything, the paper would shift (or worse, bunch up) when I put the pen together.  A glue stick would probably work - I just go for double-sided tape because I think it's the ultimate craft tool, haha!

I love the idea of replacing the plastic tubes!  I'd also love to figure out something to do with the lids.

If you spiraled a thinner strip of paper around the tube (Thin ribbon might work, too_ you could probably get away with a small amount of tape or modpodge at either end.

I need to find the pliers so  I can attack the BIC pen I found this arvo, but for the lid maybe you could.. decoupage the outside with tissue paper/small decorations? You could probably spray paint the inside without making it too thick for the pen to fit back in.

Love this.  I work with all guys and I got tired of them always stealing my pens.  So i printed out some b&w patterns, colored them in with hi-lighter and bam! girlpens.  Thank you for the great idea!

(one I just kind of wrapped around the outside and covered with tape. i was working with the pens from the stockroom)

This is really a good idea!  I can see all kinds of possibilites with these for holidays, school color events, birthdays. Good way to use up paper too.   Thanks for posting. : )    Now I am seeing the tops of the pens as possible accessories to your idea. : )  Thanks again!
