Spirit Boards on reclaimed wine barrel lids - losta pics

I did these quite a while ago but never posted them. I dug them out this morning and thought that I'd share them because I'm totally proud of them.

They are hand painted on the reclaimed lids of wine barrels. My hubby chopped them in half, sanded them down and then I went to town The lids are made of oak so they are pretty hefty, weighing about 4 pounds each!







You can see that the backs of them are still stained from the wine when they were in the barrels

Thanks for the kind comments folks. I really enjoyed making them... although the lettering was tedious. I may make more once my current crafting schedule is cleared. I do have visions of a gypsy/fortune teller one

I tried making one of these using a round cut from a stump. I had the lettering almost all woodburned on and the thing split in half!!!!!!  Using the wine barrel tops sounds much safer.

That also sounds like something that would happen to me Once, I had completed a project, was just about to package it up and stick it in the post, and decided to put a protective clear coat on top. It ate through the paint and destroyed my project

I never quite got the hang of wood burning though I've seen some really really amazing work done with it.

The only thing with the barrel tops is that they need to be sanded down... a lot. They also need to be glued/braced together somehow because when your chop them in half and you don't want them falling apart into their separate slats.

I used to use spirit boards but that was years ago. I haven't used one in ages but that's probably because family, work and crafting have taken over every living moment

I haven't even thought of using the boards I've made but I suppose I sort of look at like wearing an item of clothing I've made that is really meant for someone else to wear. It doesn't seem right to use something that will one day belong to someone else. Does that make sense?
