The upper left vest seems crocheted.  Can it be done by knitting?

If you mean the short-sleeved top over the long sleeves - no, knitting wouldn't be the same at all. It is crochet motifs sewn or crocheted together. Not too difficult, though - you could learn easily! And very portable!
