The lids are attched HOWEVER if you in a country that does not have Altoids please find something as close to this as you can....It is a for good fun!!

I'd also point out that if you really wanted to get an authentic Altoids tin, people do sell empty ones on ebay specifically targeting crafters who like to decorate them. Might be too much hassle but in case you really wanted the real thing, it's a route you might not have thought of.

Thanks for the dimensions! I have tin I got from work today which might fit the bill. I better go and measure it. I know I can go to the imported goods store and buy actual Altoids (then I get to taste them too) if my tin is too far off.

Juts out of curiosity, how much do Altoids cost in the US? In Australia they sell for $4.50 ($3.00US) for mint or $4.95 for cinnamon.

EDIT: The tin is too big. Off to the imported foods shop this week.

Depending on where you get them, they're about $2.00 - $2.50 a tin. Doesn't much matter what flavor. (Though they have chocolate Altoids as well and they tend to be 50 cents or so more than the normal ones.) But about $1.99 is the general, normal price around here.

(Link for example Walgreens is a national chain of drug stores here in the US.)
