This year, inspired by a costume I had seen on cosplay.com, I decided to do a Mad Hatter costume.

Everything was made from scratch except for the mask and gloves.  I started work on September, and was painting the final coat on the cane the night before Halloween.

The cane was the most fun to make.  I used floral foam and gesso to make the tea pot.  Unfortunately I don't have a good picture of it.

I wore the costume out to a party Friday night, with the mask, and to my own birthday party on Sunday, without the mask.  While I really like how the costume looked with the mask, it was hard to see out of at night, and was quite warm.  But overall, I think the costume really turned out well.

What a beautiful outfit!  I like it better without the mask.  The Mad Hatter needs a face.  Smiley

Wow!  This is gorgeous.  I love your choice of fabric.  Do you happen to have the link to the original costume from cosplay.com?  Also, is the coat from a Butterick pattern?

Thanks everyone!  I got a lot of comments on how creepy the costume was with the mask.  I liked the idea of it though, since the Mad Hatter is a character from a book and he can look like whatever you imagine him to be.  With the mask, I was able to keep that illusion alive.

Toribird:  The original costume was here - http://www.cosplay.com/costume/164410/  I really liked her use of the mask and asked her if it would be okay if I did the same.  She said yes, and I ran with it from there.  The pattern for the coat was Butterick 4954.

That coat is SUPERB! The whole ensemble is a wonderful costume, but the coat is completely wearable and stylish forever!

Love the hat, too. Did you use a form or pattern, or did you wing it?

That is AWESOME! Definitely my kind of costume! The mask was really a cool idea, but the outfit is still great on it's own.
